24 thoughts on “Are NYLON or STEEL Strings better for BEGINNER Guitarists?

  • I have taught over 1,000 students many of whom were kids.
    (1) MANY STUDENTS QUIT OVER PAIN when you have to learn on light gauge steel strings (160 psi). A better alternative to an acoustic set is a set of silk and steel strings at 85 psi (but the neck angle has to be adjusted with the truss rod to prevent damaging the guitar).

    (2) MANY STUDENTS PREFER CLASSICAL GUITARS BECAUSE OF NYLON STRINGS (80 psi). The nut being wider is not an issue because classical guitars come in 5 different sizes. Cordoba brand guitars come in 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 7/8, and full size. Therefore, they are better suited for teaching because you can find the perfect size for your student. This is not true for most brands of acoustic steel strings. I cover all this in detail on my website for those who want more information when my new website goes live May 1, 2025. Check out atlanticguitar.com/FAQs/guitar recommendations.

    (3) YOU CAN PLAY ANY STYLE OF MUSIC ON ANY GUITAR so that is a moot point. It is true that you would want an electric guitar for distorted sounds. Rock bands do unplugged acoustic versions of their songs all the time though. Country greats Zach Brown and Chet Atkins played nylon string guitars though it is true that a steel string acoustic is more associated with country music for how it cuts through the mix in unplugged situations. With the onset of amplification, a nylon string guitar can cut through the mix just as good.

    (4) BEGINNERS LEARN BASICS. Therefore, making the beginner's playing experience as good as possible and without pain is more important than the color of the guitar or the type of guitar that represents the style of music they like. They will never get to learning styles if they do not keep playing.

  • This was my mistake. My first guitar had nylon strings and couldn't learn the songs I wanted to have the sound I liked. Wish I knew I needed steel strings.

  • I’m a beginner but I’m picking classical because I love the nice soft sound like how Joan Baez plays

  • Your comparing a classic guitar to a western guitar, not strings.

You can nylon string any guitar and can buy a nylon western guitar.

    This video is dumb

  • classical guitars (which have wider necks) typically have nylon strings, while acoustic ones typically have steel strings. But I think this isn’t the reason to assume that a guitar with nylon string is a classical guitar (I used to have an acoustic with nylon string). So your argument that a guitar with nylon has a wider neck which over-stretches beginners’ fingers is irrelevant in my opinion.

  • People act like nylon strings are good only for classical music. They are amazing to play bossa nova and jazz music
