Are you making this mistake with Distortion & Overdrive pedals?

A common question I get quite often is “How should I set my pedal controls” in order to achieve a desired sound. Sometimes I also get messages or emails where a viewer has watched a youtube video, tried the same settings on their rig and had less than optimal results. In this video I’ll dig into why this is, the simple solutions to fix it, and why suggested settings in a manual aren’t actually all that helpful.

  • See, this guy I can listen to all day long. The guy from JHS makes my skin crawl within seconds and I switch off.

  • I'd love a modern take on the DS-2 with less feedback and satisfying switch rather than turbo being notched on the last knob in a nice wampler enclosure.

  • I’m trying to learn how to play and figure out what amp to buy right now, any recommendations on how I can learn or what amp to buy?

  • High gain distortion sounds better in effects return or cd/line in, while overdrive distortion works good in clean channel

  • The deeper i get into the world of guitars, the more i find that the answer to most of my questions is "just use your ears".

How do i get a certain tone out of my guitar/amp/pedal? Don't know, listen and play around with the knobs until it sounds the way you want it to sound on your specific rig. Can't get it to sound right no matter how much you try? Then maybe the answer is that you don't have the right equipment to get the tone you want, and maybe you should consider investing in some upgrades or new inclusions into your setup.

  • Just bought a BD-2 after so many years of playing.. Along with the OD-3 they are excellent boss overdrive pedals. I’m not a huge fan of boss distortion pedals. Too bright. But those two overdrives are excellent. Kind of a good balance to my 808.

  • I realize this posting is 3 years old…but also, for the last 3 years, I've been trying to dial in the Dracarys to a usable tone. I bypass my preamp and go straight into the return because I don't care for the preamp…I can get a decent tone…until the rest of the band joins in. The mid control on that pedal is just weird. Unfortunately, I keep going back to my Metal Zone. Also, not everyone is using tube amps these days…and guitar stores (at least in my area) are few and far between, and don't have the more boutique stuff to try out, so I get stuck listening to demos on super high-end and colored videos that just don't provide a realistic display. I really want to love this Dracarys!

  • These tones sound to have too much distortion. I like notes to have clarity with power. EX: check out the soloing like Whisky slow blues.

I would love to find a pedal that can put this type of power in the soloing.

  • How are you shooting pink noise into the front of these pedals? I love this concept and want to try it at home

  • If I remember right, don’t you have to rectify that raw data before it can be analyzed properly?

  • Can someone tell me why drive pedals sound fizzy in fender-like settings in amp simulators, but not in real amps?
