This is genuinely an amazing piece of advice, I could not exaggerate enough how important it is to always challenge yourself. I think many people, including many professionals, hit an arbitrary ceiling because they lose the interest/vision for whatever reason to push their boundaries… if you always keep looking to do things you suck at, you'll always keep growing! And if you can't do something, that's not a sign you shouldn't do it, it's a sign you can improve!
I'm a classical guitarist, people have called me crazy on numerous accounts for the fingerings I attempt for phrasing or color purposes, often they can be judgmental because it seems like I don't know my own limits and am not 'serving' the music… but I grow so much through those choices and half the time by the end I'm actually able to do something musically I would never have been able to if I hadn't been trying. And now my toolkit is so much further advanced, that the crazy things aren't so crazy anymore.

Yeah man, totally agree… And currently going through the pain of learning the shredding technique… This whole week repeat after repeat it sounds terrible.
But maybe hopefully slowly improving. Ive been finger picking a lot so pick technique especially the alternate picking is really hard to synchronise with the fret board hand.
