I would argue that there are no bad tones. If you use your imagination and creativity, every tone has it's place. Unless you are dead-set on sounding like everyone else.

The omnipresent "guitar guy" obsession with TOAN is kinda dumb. The vast majority of audiences will not really notice or care. If you're in tune and you can be heard over everything else that's going on, you're gonna be fine.
Nobody buys an album for great tone on it's own. What you play is vastly more important than tone.
As some others have said, the Squier through DI was fine; add a little reverb/chorus and it'll be perfectly pleasant. Nobody's gonna walk out on you just because your guitar sounds like that.
The whole "I spent $10,000 on gear to give me the perfect TOAN" thing reminds me of guys that re-mortgage their house to get the perfect vinyl setup or whatever. It's just guys making excuses for their gear addiction.
Honestly not my style of playing, but no bullshit, the cheap guitar and D.I. sounds just as good, because of your phrasing and playing style 🙂 thats always the most important part IMHO ☺️
It sounds too muddy and way too much bass
The D.I and clean solid-state guitar sound were not horrible at all (1:55) – they just sounded clean ! I'll never understand why many guitarists have a blinkered view of "good tone" in that they only like overdrive/distortion, but an extreme aversion to a pure clean tone! ????????

it's fun to record a good tone then double track with a really awful tone. the two together usually sound great
Go’s to show that sound you're searching for is totally subjective. Things were going good until the distortion was added for me.
Other than the bends that bad guitar tone was better than anything I can do
One thing I’ve discovered on my own is that DI clean sounds pretty good if you mess around with it a bit, while DI distortion/overdrive is just unfixable

What model squire was that bullet, affinity classic vibe?
My favourite sound in this clip was the clean Fender into the handwired amp through the compressor pedal, whereas all the overdriven versions had a tad too much drive and too much muddiness for the style IMHO.
