I’ve been on a journey.. One of which, I’m positive, many of you are familiar with…

I’ve always wanted my bass to sound like my heroes. You know, the immortal legends that I’ve listened to on recordings and in person.

It all began with the choice of a preamp pedal and bass DI pedal. After much research and deliberation, I chose the MXR M80.

In reality, I did so ONLY because of its price point and versatility ($135 as compared with other more boutique options).

The M80 gave me a choice of Distortion or Clean tone, as well as DI functionality. My favorite aspect is the LOVELY “color” switch.

Next, I needed a compressor to tame my dynamics for a more even tone across all of my strings.

I’m extremely satisfied with the MXR M87 Bass Compressor. It is renowned for its transparency in tone (I didn’t really desire a compressor that would color my signal at this stage in my chain). It is my favorite bass compressor and doubles as a studio grade compressor for guitar, keys, or even vocals.

The recent spike in the quality of amp and cabinet modelling showed me that I needed a DI that offered both. This way, I would be able to have full tonal control at my feet, on my board, and without bringing an amp to the studio or stage.

This led me to the Sansamp Bass Driver DI V2. This new version offers variable mid controls and low controls.

The amp and cabinet simulation does wonders for making any tone sound like all of those amazing recordings of the past and present.

The Sansamp BDDI V2 completely rejuvenates the MXR M80 distortion channel. It is much less offensive, thanks to the tube amp and cab sim. It just has a pleasing “baked” in tone.

Last in my signal chain is the AMAZING TC Electronic Spark Mini. This tiny pedal adds a clean boost to your sound, complimented with a very musical compression that makes me smile. Its just bright and harmonically pleasing.

I finish it off with a blended DRY DI tone, straight from my bass pickups into a Radial SB-2 passive DI. This DRY DI is blended with my effected tone and it really helps out in beefing up the modulation effects and distortion.

In summary, my pedal board has both an “amped tone” mixed with the “DRY DI tone” and voila! Huge, warm, bass guitar tone.

Leave a comment and let me know what you think.

**No EQ or compression was added to these bass samples

  • Dude how’s the stagebug DIs workin for ya. I run a similar signal chain for my bass. Does it color the tone at all? I’m sure it’s great on noise

  • Great rig! I've been using the MXR M80 for a while now and I was thinking whether I should replace it with the Tech21 Sansamp BDDI v2 because the drive wasn't tube-like enough for me unlike the Sansamp. But then you showed you can use both at the same time and it sounded even better. Question: if you're running the M80 into the Sansamp, what's the MXR's EQ settings like?

  • That is an awesome set of pedals! Love (AND LIVE ON) sansamps; the M80 is totally sweet; I love phaser on bass!! I just subscribed to your channel and I'd love it if you did the same and let me know what you think of the guitar and bass demos I've put up with my own pedalboard!!

  • I'm curious to what the sparkboost is actually adding. Is it adding compression or is it just making the tone louder? I'd love to know your impressions of the unit's sound when switch on BUT set to unity gain. I hear the full sized sparkboost does add something in that setting, but I haven't heard it myself.

Agree about the Tech 21 gear. I use a VT bass and I'll only ever use distortion if the VT is on afterwards in the chain.
