  • This has to be my favorite bass lesson of yours! I sometimes do the interval thinking while playing, but now I'm going to try to "play" songs without the bass as well. Thank you for the tip!

  • Once again good info – I remember Jaco said in an interview that it is all about the melody and how bass players should be able to play the melody of the song. Since I heard that years ago I spent lots of time learning the melodies to themes songs – like you suggest – or even clarinet lines from benny goodman. I never analyzed it like you have here regarding the intervals being used but I think the practice of playing melodies on the bass gives you – and your ear a much better understanding of what works and what does not. my two cents….

  • Thanks Scott! I play with the church band. Often the spirit-filled leader on keys will take off on whatever key and progression feels right at the moment – true improvisation! It can be a struggle to catch up and be able to anticipate where he's going with it. I believe that once the language of music is firmly in my ear and head, I'll hear the intervals coming before he gets the ivory to the felt.

  • Man, I've been playing the violin for 15 years before taking up the bass. My teachers were great professionals, inspirational, and got great results (not with me though :P). But man, your "famous songs" trick for ear training, it's a different dimension. The return on investment is soo huge. You learn these 7 internvals-song pairs and that's it. Thank you so much. This is worth for anyone not just bass players. I'm liking and spreading the love.

  • I was about to throw my bass. Again Scott gave me hope that even I am able to learn play by ear. Its just hard work. Lets do this. Thanks Scotty! 33

  • Enjoyed this lesson Scott. if you are not lucky/tortured enough to have perfect pitch developing relative pitch is important.

  • Hands down the best advice one musician can give another!  I do have to point out here that there is an easier way to go about it though.  You can learn this very quickly using software (there are many available) as well as recognizing descending notes, chords (more important for guitar and piano players) and scales.  It definitely needs to be practiced outside of software, while listening to the radio and while improvising.

  • Scott, usually I love your lessons (I bought also your course) however I believe this one is useless … a musician (also a basic one) should be able to recognize those "jumps" on the scales … for examples a third, a forth or a fifth NEEDS to be recognized realtime and all the others too … if a bass players is not able to do this (even after a training) is better for him/her to change instrument as all this is the baseline for such a kind of instrument … please, do not consider this as a rude comment but just my viewpoint … thanks

  • Something I do occasionally … while watching tv, movies, commercials, etc., you can sit there with your bass (unplugged) and try to play along with whatever musical soundtrack is being presented .. a fretless does work better though, cause you can always find the note regardless.

  • Thanks for your excellent lessons.  I have trouble with my fingers (thin skin, literally) and was wondering what those gloves are and how they work for you.  Thanks!
