Beginner Bass Guitar Tip That Will Transform Your Playing
Check out Talkingbass here: https://www.talkingbass.net/
One of the biggest issues I see in nearly all beginner bass players is note control. The ability to play a note and control it’s duration.
For most players when they first start out it’s just a case of put the finger on the right fret and then pick it. Then look for the next note, fret it and pick it. Rinse and repeat. And that’s fine. When you’re just getting started, there’s a lot to think about and it’s hard enough just playing the right note at the right time.
However, the actual duration of the note and your ability to sustain or choke the sound is a very important part of making everything sound correct. So today I’m going to give you a quick lesson on how to more easily conquer that side of your playing.

What bass is that
Finished watching this and then went right into a Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats video and started yelling, "He's in the home position, he's in the home position!" (i.e. Joseph Pope III). Yep, I'm a newbie. hah. But I'm enjoying the journey.
Always good lessons!!!
Guys so I was wondering. I am ready a drummer but my wish is also to play the bass guitar. Should I start playing it?
whip out your upright bass on your next video.
Hi Mark, thanks for your wonderful lessons. The way I choke the notes (or rather play shorter notes) is that I don't press the string down with my left hand, just keeping the finger on the string but not pressing down. This mutes the string as well. Then I just press down the very moment I pluck it with the right hand, and lift it again to the "unpressed" position when I want the note to stop. Basically I mute the string only with pressing finger, not with the other fingers of the "home position" as well). Is that also a common way of doing it, or is it just me who does that. And if it is common, which way would you recommend?
What about using the pinky finger doing the same thing? Or other. Any tips on them?
Newbie here. Thanks, I can actually do this as its made so clear and detailed.
Hi
I have a question:
Is a fender rumble 30 bass amp loud enough for small gigs. I play in the youth band at my church and do some performances at my school.
I love these beginner videos. Even being a player for 15 years, there's always something you can take away to help craft your art. Thanks as always Mark!
Glad you are still doing videos for us beginners.
after 7 years of watching you video lessons you're the best Mark
Hey Mark. You are really helping us out here. I have this probleme: I have been playing for some few years, and when i am playing people tell that i have great grooves and stuff. But the thing is i always find myself being locked in one position, i don't know where else to go on the fretboard and how to go there. When i see others players walking from end to end of fretboard…man, it makes me sooo depressed and frustrated..What am i not doing? I want to sign up to your lessons. Do u do "one on one"lessons? I am dying inside, man.I need help
Thanks for the video Mark, as always your videos are excellent full on lessons that really help improve everyone's bass playing
one of the first song, that I have learnt =)
