  • What do you think of the Ernie ball stainless wound? And would you go regular slinky 50-105, super slinky 45–100, or hybrid 45-105?

I’ve used the nickel wound eb strings and was underwhelmed. I like the DR high-beam stainless strings, but for the price they don’t last as long as I’d like.

  • I'm 66 years old and have always used 3-5-7-9 gauge strings, very light but im now thinking of change as the sound is really thin, but another big reason is that i could do with fatter strings to strengthen my fingers as im used to thin, i now have very weak muscle strenght in my fingers. i may try those elixir strings, theyre 40 quid but they may be what im looking for. cheers for the vid.

  • It also depends on what type of bass you have I find, open pole pick ups sound better with heavier, Jaydee and Status basses sound excellent with 30-90… Just ask Mark King

  • Can I tune to EADGB with the ERNIE BALL REGULAR SLINKY 5-
STRING BASS STRINGS – 45-130 GAUGE on my 5 string base?
I bought it second hand yesterday from a jazz guy but I broke the B trying to tune it to C ( EADGC). My new strings are in the mail. I don’t think i want to tune BEADG. PS Im new to bass and had it only for one day :).

  • Thanks for that – I have just bought a P Bass and put TI flatwounds on it so I was looking to take my Jazz bass back to roundwounds and give it some funk.

I think I will buy the steel D'Addarios for that low price and see how I get on. If I like it, then maybe Elixirs for when they need replacing.

  • I watched a couple of interviews of Victor Wooten and he said he likes light gauge strings for live performance, but he uses heavier gauge strings for studio recording as he far prefers the tone/timbre of the heavier strings for his playing. He said he uses lighter gauge strings for live performances because it’s more comfortable for him. That’s a direct quote from him.

  • Get a 5 string bass & string it up with a D'Addario Pro Steel EPS230 Heavy Gauge 4 string set, use the 110g for your open E, your open Drop D, & your open Drop B …via a HipShot Double Stop Bass Extender. Don't use the 90g in this string set at all, but rather, use the 75g for your A string & use the 55g for your D string. Then, buy a 40g single & a 30g single for your G string & your high C string–transforming your bass into a High-Five. Best 5 string bass setup EVER!!! This cost me only $33 between Amazon & D'Addario websites.

  • I like the information you are giving and it sounds all very cohesive. but why are you making an example, showcasing the different sounds between strings on two different instruments with completly different pickups… sorry, but that kinda shows nothing, doesnt it? or am I missing something completely here…?
