BEST Cheap Tube Amp? – Harley Benton Tube15

Affordable Tube Amp (Too Good To Be True?) – Harley Benton Tube15

This amp could be really nice. It costs next to nothing. It’s a valve/tube combo with 15 watts of power, and you can switch that down to 1 watt. Harley Benton might be on to a real winner here. There are a couple of options on the cheap tube amp market, but not many that I know of that cost this little and offer this much power. The Tube15 also has a 12 inch Celestion Speaker, which is nice.
If this thing sounds good, it could be the best thing since sliced bread.

  • So, Elmo finally gives his thumbs up to an amp… and it isn't available in my country. I think I am switching to cowbell.

  • I'd like to see the schematic for this thing, something to consider is that when there's distortion it matters where you apply EQ, or rather setting the tone early on in the amp stages allows control of what distorts first, mids or very top end. Then once the signal is distorted use the bass, mid, treble to shape the tone for the best overall sound. Non-linear systems are complicated, yes I'm an engineer. If you want to test this out, drive it hard into distortion then vary the tone and listen to see if the distribution of the distortion changes, use bass, mid, treb just to get the final tone how you like it.

  • The "weird resonance" isn't the amp – it's a repeating delay effect left on on your board or in your D.A.W. – easily done, easily undone too. It's in the recording chain, not the amp.

Odd. Why doesn't he know this and sort it out? Why is he thinking it's in the amp?

  • The Tube15 is a no-brainer. Sounds good, and for the price of roughly about €250 it is a steal. Some people say the stock speaker is not good, but I disagree. It is maybe not the best speaker, but is more than only usable. And it weights less than many other speakers, what helps to keep the Tube 15 quite easy to transport. Mine is soundwise a little bit on the warm side, but with Tone (presence) almost full up and Treble also very high, it sounds great with warmer sounding humbucker guitars. It takes pedals quite well, so I am able to use it as a practice amp with heavy metal pedals in front of it. The reverb is also decent, and in case you don't like the built-in reverb, put your favorite reverb pedal in the effects loop. The one-watt switch doesn't change the sound (in my ears), it just reduces the volume. Still one watt can ve rather loud, if you want, but if you do not want, the Tube15 can easily be set to bedroom volume levels. It is an ideal amp for home practice, for band rehearsals (if your drummer is not tooooo loud) and also for pub gigs etc. As said, if you want more or just a different overdrive/distortion as the one build in, hang a pedal in front of it. Buy the Harley Benton/Stageright Tube15 as long as it is available. Just do it, do not hesitate.

  • I love your presenting style, personality and playing, but I wish you'd EQ the amps to sound good rather than leave everything at noon. I'm not super-keen on the sound of that mahogany Strat but don't know wether I don't like the sound of the guitar (too dark) or it's the amp. A standard Strat or Tele would be so much more helpful from the listeners perspective. Easier to compare. Thanks anyway.

  • Hello Elmo,

Looks like my previous comment was either removed or never posted (could swear I did see it in the comments)

But I asked if this HB tube15 that derives from the monoprice is the same as the Subzero Saturn 15 that is sold via gear4music? I posted a link to the actual amp on their website so that may be the reason my post got removed.

It looks identical (accept for the colour and small details) same hardware and speaker and all. Do you think this is the same amp? Thanks in advance and keep up the good work!

  • Great channel, Elmo. The REAL test: clean headroom? FULL VOLUME, still clean?
Maybe it could be a pedal platform? I wonder how long it stays clean, before breakup at full power? ????
My Ibanez Tube Screamer head (15 watts) is not loud enough to use with a medium volume drummer.
