…this includes TWO play-along cover videos, which you can use to follow along with or reference while learning the song. One cover uses a simplified picking pattern, and the other mimics what’s heard on the Beatles album. Both covers are slowed down, making it helpful to follow along with.

Hey friends! Happy to share this my lesson for “Blackbird” by The Beatles, which is of course one of the most classic acoustic songs there is. This has been a much requested song over the last couple years, and I’m happy to finally share my take on it.

No matter your skill level, my video lesson has you covered. For beginners, I’ll walk through each section of the song showing simple, 2-finger chord shapes — giving you the ability to play the entire song without worrying about any of the trickier fingerpicking patterns. This includes an easier way to play the dreaded diminished chord shapes, which are the trickiest part of this song. For more advanced players, I then dive into the fingerpicking pattern using the open 3rd string on all chords — providing the tabs section by section.

Video timestamps:

– 0:00 Preview & Lesson Summary
– 2:23 Chord Shapes (Big Picture)
– 4:40 Intro & Verse Riff (Part 1)
– 6:57 Verse Riff (Part 2)
– 12:23 Verse Riff (Part 3)
– 13:44 Chorus & Instr. Fill Riff
– 16:42 Simplifying the Diminished Chords
– 18:29 Adding the Fingerpicking Pattern
– 23:38 Farewell & Final Advice

  • Nice job. FWIW, when I switch between the major and diminished chords, I anchor my pinkie finger while switching the index and middle fingers. Feels smoother, at least for me.

Alot of other teachers just breeze by shit without the tabs and I'm trying to figure out what figure is where. My guitar skills have improved 10-fold since following you brother thanks again!

  • This is an absolutely great channel to learn songs on. On a side note, I took at look at some of your past songs as well and it was like time traveling through progressions of Davids. I am waiting for mustache only David or something of that sort. Perhaps mullet David? That might be too much…either way, way to go! Fantastic content!

  • Thanks David, have been a patron member of yours for a while now, but being on a fixed income, and your new format of collecting money, I'm going to have to check out. Wish you all the best. keep picking.

  • I'm missing the meaty section of my pointer finger form a work accident, you think it would be possible to learn this with a pick even though I'm not very good yet?

  • Incredible. If we don't learn this song after going through all the steps of this lesson, then we weren't meant to play this song. David puts a lot of time putting together his lessons. Wow! The thoroughness, clarity and detail is incredible. Thank you David for "everything" you do! Also, your relaxed style, pace and pleasantness is much appreciated!
