Released in 1967, Van Morrison’s “Brown Eyed Girl” became an instant classic that is still heard all over classic rock radio and television to this day.
In this Brown Eyed Girl guitar lesson I will demonstrate how to play all the chords that make up this 60’s classic, plus we will take an in-depth look at the intro as well.
The song starts with a catchy melody harmonized in thirds for the most part. It is a great way to usher in this classic feel good song.
This intro can be a little bit tricky for a couple of reasons. First, it requires you to shift pretty quickly up and down the fretboard. But this is also a great opportunity to practice that sort of technique. Second, it requires you to play pretty high up on the fretboard. If you are playing this on an acoustic guitar it can be a little daunting to play that high up on the fretboard, especially if you don’t have a cutaway.
After the intro, the rest of the song employs a series of simple chords that are very easy to play and don’t require any type of complex rhythms at all.
The verse contains just the basic open position G C and D chords. This is great because this makes “Brown Eyed Girl” excellent for even the beginning guitarist to learn.
The chorus also uses only simple chords but make sure you pay attention in the video lesson when I describe how the last chord in the chorus changes the second time around. That new chord will be a D7 chord. Still very easy to play so don’t worry.
The only other part of the song would be the bridge or Sha la la la la section. Once again the chords and rhythms are quite simple and shouldn’t be much of a challenge for anyone except for the absolute beginner.
So take a few minutes and learn this one. It is a great for just about any occasion!

You rock Carl! Thanks for all the lessons, they are much appreciated!!!!
Fantastic combination of technical, encouragement and keeping it short. My favourite song tutorials.
Brown Eyed Girl is actually a hard song to play. They're not just banging out chords in it. There's a alot going on in it.
The best lessons start out with a run through. Brilliant.
Really enjoy your lessons. You do an excellent job. Not to fast not to slow. Thank you!
Wow imagine not accidentally slicing your pointer finger with a carving knife and being able to play guitar.
This channel is great
We know the chords already, Give us the lead through the progression.
These are the best video guitar lessons! I’m still in beginner mode with my instructor, but this gives me so much inspiration. I love the 3 camera view. I’m definitely singing up for premium. Thank you, Carl!

Carl, forgive me but I always thought the intro was a memphis double stop scale from the 3rd fret. No?
Always clear and easy to follow instructions thank you!
I like how the D7 sounds there as opposed to just the D that most others play. I also like that you're fingering the G the same way that I do, which seems obvious, but one particular popular guitar instructor spent half of his video going on about how tough the G to C transition is for beginners. Lol. It isn't if you use the pinky, but hey. I was hoping to see more of the single note runs and how to play the bass line bit, but otherwise this is better than what else I've seen.
Please, do Moondance! Please,please,please,please!
nicce!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I really like this tutorial and its helpful while im trying to learn guitar, but my hands are too small to easily play any chords and your have to press the strings pretty hard to get the right sound. When I do it it just doesn't sound right, and the damn thing is bigger then i am so that doesn't help! I'm thinking i should just stick to ukulele
thanks
you deserve like the nobel peace prize for helping so many people.
Thanks Carl!
Very helpful lesson!
Well, my guitar doesn't have the cut out and I'm not sure how I'm gonna play the intro. It kind a s*cks… (I just bought it last Wed.) 🙁
