A general overview of some of the processes taken. This kit was built using basic tools at the kitchen table to demonstrate the ease of the build. This kit was a breeze to complete . The fretwork other than a fret board conditioning was already done by Leo Jaymz. The body material (wood) appears to be walnut and not the mahogany that Leo Jaymz states. Which is a good thing. All hardware was of good quality and did its job great. The strings in the demo video (Link below) are stock strings that came with the kit. (Upgrading to flats soon..Stay tuned for that video)
Setting the neck was easy and straight forward, with no modification required. (Not Shown).

The bass finish was done using black Varathane Premium poly and stain in one (to fill grain) followed by Minwax Expresso for the final color.

The electronics are all pre-wired with a plug and play harness, making assembly very simple.
A complete in color directions manual was included with this DIY kit, and covers everything that you need. This manual is for THIS BASS ONLY.

Tuners were excellent and hold perfectly.
The neck truss rod did require adjustment for setting the action properly. (Not Shown)
The Nut was slotted and cut properly. Note: It may appear high out of the box . It is not and is Rick height.

Bass was packaged well from Leo Jaymz.

The neck is maple with a scarf joint (Well Done).

The truss rod cover I used is a Modified Rick cover to fit between the tuning machines.
(Ebay sourced) 30.00

The result was one of my favorite builds to date.

  • You did a great job . I have one that I'm starting but I have a question.
Did you tilt the neck any? I mocked up the neck and I have the bridge set to middle height and the saddles just touch the strings . I think there will be plenty of tread on the saddle to set my string height but I would prefer not to have the bridge jacket up.

  • A cool trick is to mix your first coat of sanding sealer 50/50 with alcohol. It still seals but it lets more stain color through for more dramatic effects. Cheers.

  • Just ordered one of these kits, will be here in two days. I wanted to go with a rusty copper type look for the hardware, but I cant find the plum blossom style machine heads I had came across on Amazon, kinda bummed but I'll figure out what options I want after I build it. Really excited, going to have my son help me paint and build it.

  • I just bought this kit and I noticed that when I mate the neck and pick guard that the pick guard is not aligned with the screw pattern on the body. Did you not also encounter this problem?

  • I will be buying one of these kits based on your review sir. Excellent review btw. I may buy a second as well and try my hand at a double output like a true Rick. I will keep you posted, and I may ask for some tips. My first run at attempting a build.

  • I’ve seen a couple of these kits before from different companies. There’s currently one that you can buy with the Rick headstock, from the guitar kit fabric. It’s the exact same as the one that got taken down from the fretwire a few years ago.

  • I got a proper copy of Rick Bridge before I started, and to get your 44 inch to Nut, I couldn't put neck all way in, to get intonation etc, was so glad I tried it first before I glued neck in, otherwise Bridge would had been hanging over bottom edge

  • Cool trick with the baking soda man, Cheers? After my p bass build I plan to do a rickenbacker style bass with a gibson mudbacker neck pickup. Can't wait.

  • Nice build! I'm a first time builder and am learning. Is there a reason to shield just the control area and not the pickups areas?

  • Thanks for the excellent video!
Have wondered how well the neck joint on these Ricken type guitars holds up over time. It seems like the tenons are fairly short. Do you think necks on these will stay straight, in alignment over time?
Also, checked Leo Jaymz site and unfortunately, don't see any Ricken style 6 or 12 string guitars listed. Would love to build each of them, if were available, or buy assembled, if no kit.
