Canadian Luthier wins an International Award for his revolutionary guitar design

It took Riversong Guitars Founder Mike Miltimore six years and hundreds of failures to develop a revolutionary guitar design that rewarded him with the prestigious international Dealer’s Choice Award from the renowned Musical Merchandise Review Magazine (MMR). Growing up in the family music store (Lee’s Music) in Kamloops, BC, Mike learnt how to build guitars from his father, Lee Miltimore. Mike’s mother, Rose Miltimore, can attest that those two have a unique relationship that greatly impacted Mike’s journey.

  • National resonator guitars had the same neck thru body 'stick' in the 1930's. JLD Bridge Doctor does a similar thing. Great minds think alike.

  • Reminds me of the construction of my 1969 Fender Villager 12 string acoustic. It had a bolt-on electric 12 string neck, an acoustic body, a heel block, a block at the bottom of the body, and a metal pipe that ran the full length of the body from the heel to the bottom of the guitar, connecting the two blocks.

  • i got on this thing,
where i thought if i used really heavy electric strings, really high out put pickups, and an impedance matching transformer, that i could directly drive a guitar mounted speaker..
the battery-less self contained electric was pretty much a failure.( not as loud as an acoustic, so good thing it was just a bunch of Math )
glad to hear you pulled through, and came out on top.

  • Taking of those shackles reminded me of a RUSH lyric from Hemispheres. " Throw off those chains of reason and your prison disappears". Awesome job on the design!

  • The first thing I thought when I saw his design was old banjos! Vintage banjos have a dowel running from the neck through the body much like that, and probably for the same reason. Banjo heads need to be resonate.

  • Very nice—I wish this video included playing the guitar more at both loud strumming and softer fingerstyle guitar so the viewer can confirm the sound quality at both loud and softer volumes.

  • I'm always interested in the next step forward in acoustic guitar design and sound. Thank you for your determination and smarts. I hope to play one of your instruments soon!

  • The acoustic 12 string Yamaha I found is one in a thousand , it plays and sounds like no other but Yamaha made alot more that are just mediocre

  • Could you not have taken a minute of video time and actually play it for us ?! Wouldn't this help sell the ax if what you claim IS true ?!

  • Interesting subject. Too bad it’s produced like a stinking reality show, and similarly imparts zero information ????????

  • Regardless of whatever happens to guitars and wood.
Realize someone worked diligently to design a new guitar top. And he did it!

  • Congratulations ???? is there really a keyboard being played throughout this story about a acoustic guitar design breakthrough? Hardly any acoustic guitar being played at all …

  • So he built what is essentially a neckthrough design that electric guitars have been using for decades? How is this revolutionary?

  • Congratulations, brother. I'm currently in the failure stage of my journey so hearing your story is food for my soul right now. Cheers and God bless

  • Look, saying you are standing amongst giants is about as good as saying you are not worth of anything and should quit. Here's the thing. The "Giants" were all babies once. I HATE it when talented people act like those who came before are to be worshiped. No, how else are we going to continue innovations? I'm not being mean I'm being honest. Humans do not need these slow moving documentaries to be great. If anything is scared some from achieving these heights. How? Well humans experience anxiety, sadness, laziness, and these are greater feats to defeat than making it with giants. I just want 4he human mindset to change. That's it. No need for an MTV Production team writing what's supposed to be natural progression without scripts.

  • Love how he was at his wits end, then bam,…he begins to dismantle his theories only to discover his foundation was solid gold, hooray!

  • Canadian luthiers are shining with talent. In particular, classical guitar builders Fritz Mueller, and Martin Blackwell are incredible. And, there are way more than I will list here,…kudos to them all.
