Capturing Painkiller Guitar Tone – Marshall DSL20 Vortex Mic Technique
I absolutely love this album and always wondered how they got that ear pearcing mid range that bounces around and cuts through the mix.
It’s all about the placement of the room mic so it picks up reflections and goes in/out of phase with the close mic.
So we hit 100k subs and I’m humbled to say the least. YouTube has been my outlet, side project and passion for over a decade.
I thank you all…
Thanks for tuning in again, feel free to email me with any questions at Lambchopper678@me.com Due to a fairly large volume I might not be able to get back as quick as I used to.

The Priest guy said he has an MXR Chorus on all times. Same for Alexi Laiho.
????
You nailed it!!!, not question asked
I hear a subtle flanger on the album and the guitars are probably triple tracked.
Glen & KK's secret was a parrot in the studio. It all makes sense now. Must be cause you nailed it here!
After some deep thinking i do believe they also blended a rockman x100 on some songs for painkiller and defenders of the faith.
Killer solo…
Wow great Glenn Tipton tone
So the mics are running into what interface?
2:45 has just rocked my whole world
Damn what a good tone man
Well done!!!
Dude tones sounds great man your a beast an I enjoy watching u play I learned a lot by watching u play man……Thank you M/
We need an update for the katana, your series on the Metallica tones have been amazing
That tone is spot on. Incredible solo there too! ????????
Is it possible to set up a similar sound in the katana boss?
Not just the tone is awesome, your playing is amazing, obviously you're a Priest fan!
Waiting for Manowar tone
????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
3:33 It's amazing how the modern bands always scoop that mids, but Judas Priest sounds extremely heavy EXACTLY using themo/
Dude great vid man great job on the mighty priest playing
This could be the best video ever on youtube! Thank you for all great info! I’ve talked to Chris a couple of times but then it was about the drumsound of that album.
Wow, it is literally exactly the same as the album, amazing work!
Man this is so awesome ! You made me finally unterstand what the %?*$&*# magic beyond this album tone was. Thanks a lot !
I'm watching all you're videos/uploads sistermaticly. ????
Ace's High…. Maybe!!
Dude!
Solo is …
. strange and Richie makes it his way .. mmm but i like it like hell.
I dig my dsl40cr more than my 900 and on some things it sounds better than my ‘82 800 DSL is a great series I don’t care where it’s made, el34s and 12ax7s work for me my 800 still has 6550s and 12ax7s I use tungsol I feel they sound better than sovtek, I have no idea which preamp tubes it came with when I bought it in ‘82
Hey ive had 2 dsL's hidden gem !!! And a descent price ????????????
Smokn bud !!!
Nailed it mate. Killer job
RIP Chris Tsangerides. Guy knew how to make guitars sound awesome. The albums he was producing for the band Anthem around the same time had similar tones too.
Dude this is wild! Amazing that its just phase cancelled, I always figured it was a Rockman blended with their other gear but this is just perfect. Now someone has to make an IR of this kind of setup for us modeling amp bois…
Powerslave tone please! Followed by Seventh son!
Yes! This is spot on the money, dude!
This is in my opinion the bands finest album.
I dont know why people shit on the dsl, I had one. The tone was the best I've ever heard in my life. It nails all 80s metal to a T once dialed in correctly
So many engineers/producers focus on getting things perfectly in phase, when there's so much you can do when you actually intentionally play with phase cancelling.
You nailed the Painkiller sound!
You’re like a heavy metal scientist doing sound experiments.
I love how whenever Ollie says something you're just like "yeah."
Hope to see you do a cover on Judas Priest's The Sentinel and Beyond The Realms of Death ????????
Dude, you are the reason I don’t feel a need to buy an ax effects. Keep it up!
