The fast-rising Okies use solid-state amp heads, baritone guitars, and a bit of Peavey magic to bring their nightmare-rock to life.
Oklahoma City sludge rockers Chat Pile have had a busy few years. Their 2022 LP, God’s Country, broke them internationally, and their critically acclaimed 2024 follow-up, Cool World, solidified them as one of the most exciting heavy bands of the moment. We spoke with bassist Stin and guitarist Luther Manhole about the record for our November 2024 issue.
Now, we bring you the band’s first official Rig Rundown, filmed ahead of their show at The End in Nashville last fall. Tune in to see how Stin and Luther conjure the band’s brutal soundstorms on the road.

Quilter blocks are one of the most transparent amps. You get what you put in, no color.
Love seeing bands doing their own thing and getting to the level of a Rig Rundown. Way to be, Chat Pile!
Dear Luther, please don't change the HOF! It's the best reverb in the world. I also use the modulated setting as well.
to break a neck through a peavey case takes effort ,those things are almost bulletproof
I think Luther has just made me want to get Quilter for both home and rehearsals. Nice!
Cool World is easily album of the year for 2024
Aside from Justin Trosper, I think Larry LaLonde from Primus also nails the textural playing that Luther Manhole is describing here. Lots of dissonant and atmospheric playing that bounces off of the other band member’s parts. I’m a huge fan of that kind of percussive and unconventional guitar sound. So I guess Chat Pile and Primus have that in common, lol. Just a thought
I can see why Luther Manhole’s amp set on fire, he was literally playing straight fire through it every day
Thank you!!!!!!❤
So well deserved, fantastic band, all the best for 2025! See you in Europe!
I love his philosophy of live recording. Some bands suck out all the soul from their music by over polishing
Ahhhh, my favorite jazz band.
Shit Pale
Interesting how a heavy and noisy band like that can make a living out of music. But then is it like they can get 1.5-2k a month and be happy just by playing music or does it go to 3 or 4k?
Glad to see Luther Man's Hole and Stink here, it's a success!
So many powerful and haunting riffs from the legends.
From that intro demo, I’m def interested in checking them out more!
Chris is a solid interviewer…..the good Q&A about bringing in an outsider to mix elicited such a good answer & conversation
Brooo See You On The Otherside is so underrated ???? I feel like that’s their last great record
If it's any help for Luther, the EVH 5150s and whatnot have Fender clean channels. Regular 5150 cleans suuuuuck. Also the 6505MH is pretty good for a smaller form factor
These guys are just so damn cool. Caught them live in November, one of the best shows I’ve ever been to.
That bass tone just does something to me deep down inside.
yes.,, his voice is obnoxious ,
They do not look like they sound! Very organic sounding album, and very inspiring that they record so simply, but get such an original sound. What Stin says about heavy albums resonates 100%
New album is outstanding. I also have the same Sleep T!
Wow, a non-legacy band that aren't using digital amp modelers? The tide pod eaters got BTFO on this one.
i need to know how stin feels about mudvayne
Sounds like Luther needs to give one of the 5150 IIIs a go. Clean channel on those are *chef’s kiss*, especially on the EL34 variant.
Shows all you need pedal wise is a good dirt pedal, delay and reverb. Excellent video.
Peavey T-40 is so heavy.
Luther Manhole? He should be dressed in head to toe leather or maybe trade names with Rob Halford.
I had the privilege of playing a show with them in London. They are genuinely the kindest, warmest, and most humble guys. It’s so exciting to see them doing so well.
Babe wake up, chat pile rig rundown just dropped ????
Nice, a Rundown with Chat Pile that also just happens to let me know The End is still kicking!
continued success
Dude! Cool World Top 5 album of 2024! Such an ominous record, fuckin love it! Keep up the good work! Well done P.G for the sick interview! Outstanding as always
New find just recently! Been jammin you guys! Cool to see on RRD. Inspired.
This is so unbelievably rad. Absolutely love these fellas.
STIN! Plug into the effects return. It'll bypass the preamp and be the same as how you use your Sunn slave.
Lots of metal bands with bad names but "Chat Pile" might be the worst
YAAAAAASSSSSSSSS!!!!!
So happy for them. I talked to Luther’s dad outside a show about a year ago in Toronto, and he was over the moon that his son is killing it.
GRIMAAAAAAAACE
Wish the tooth got some recognition from the oklahoma scene dudes been makeing killer music for years
This was so good! Thank you for doing rundowns with all kinds of bands. If you ever get the chance I would love to see Drug Church, portrayal of guilt and Blood Incantation on here.
