Chords on Bass | The Janek Gwizdala Podcast #318

In today’s episode I dig into the Wayne Shorter composition Capricorn, take a look at new chord voicings, and explain my process for creating a new challenge in my practice routine.

Since the recent video about the dozens of books that got stolen from my porch we’ve managed to re-stock, so there are 10-Minute Manuals, Scales and Arpeggios, and almost every other book we have in stock right now!

  • I love that Maj7 sharp9, my ears want to play root, b3, 3, sharp 4, 5, 6, 7 , so Gmaj7 sharp 9 would be derived from B harmonic minor?

  • Good afternoon. I am a guitar player in the process of buying a bass. I enjoy watching your channel. I want to purchase one of your books. Which one should I buy for a beginner that is intermediate at reading sheet music?

  • What a funky drum loop at the beginning! Did you program yourself or is that from yurt or some other source?

  • Have you given any thoughts to master classes like Kurt rosenwinkel does on heartcore? Would be dope to snag some stuff like from you

  • So much great food for thought in this video!????

As I was listening to you talk about the way you started substituting the second finger with the third in this exercise, I remembered my training as a classical violinist at a music school for children.

When talking about left hand positioning and changing positions, they mainly used the 1st (second from the open string tone played with the index finger), 3rd (fourth from the open string with the index) and 4th positions (fifth from the open string with the index respectively).

They taught me that while playing closer to the nut it is more efficient to move between those three basic positions – usually transitioning upward with the ring finger.

The more I watch you, Evan Marien, Hadrien Feraud, Matt, Bubby and so many other string instrumentalists play, the more I notice the "emphasis" on the ring finger in their fretting technique.

Do you happen to know if there is a fundamental physiological explanation as to why that might be the case? How much room for intervalic and chordal thinking do you find in the four/five fret system using the ring finger compared to the middle personally? In other words, do you find yourself leaning towards the middle or the ring finger in the "middle" of a particular position?

  • When I grow up I want to play like you!
Thanks Janek for giving me something to aspire to, & hope to catch you at a show!

  • I've done a few live gigs and i've been to more practice sessions, then but my experience playing with other musicians is drummers can make you or break you if they're playing in a different Tempo
And self glorified guitar players with big Egos can also break you too. Also never been far from a gig.
But I've quit 2 bands already.

  • I have nearly worked out that exercise by ear, just a few notes after the ascending minor arpeggio. Thanks, Janek for your continued inspiration.

  • What a great opening – but i wish you had an underlying harmony, piano, playing as well, showing on the screen, so we could get it together with you! I've spent £100 on 5 of your books from Amazon. I'm entrawled by your 10 Minute Manual book – have learnt so much from the Example 2 – Common Quarter Notes. The shared note idea. Best wishes & thanks for your musical inspiration ????????

  • This is such perfect time for me – my first custom bass just arrived – it’s very similar to your new Mattisson! Headless, dark walnut top, lovely almost orange ash body (I forget what wood your top is!) but it’s awesome to just get used to it and learn how it plays! Hope to see you 10th May at Ronnies!

  • I loved this one Janek! So many gems played and said, when you said, if you don’t find that thing when you’re in your environment, you may never find it live. That is so true, and also I have came up with new little fills I did on accident while live

  • Hey Janek. Great video as always. I am curious on what pedals you would recommend if you were playing some classical music?
