Classical Composer reacts to IRON MAIDEN: PIECE OF MIND (Side 1) | The Daily Doug (Episode 892)
#ironmaiden #pieceofmind #uptheirons
In this edition of #thedailydoug, I’m returning to the music of Iron Maiden for our first video of 2025. On this occasion, we’re paying tribute to longtime drummer Nicko McBrain, who has recently retired from active touring with the band. With their fourth album, Piece of Mind (1983), they welcomed Nicko into the band…and he’s been with the band ever since. All four of these songs (Where Eagles Dare, Revelations, Flight of Icarus, and Die With Your Boots On) were first time listens for me. I hope you enjoy as much as I did!

Now that is an album side.
Where Eagles Dare is an Alistair MaClean book that was made into the movie. The book, the movie and the recording are all great.
think you Doug for this vidéo , Iron Maiden, great band
Revelations is easily on my top 5 Maiden songs (which is saying something, given that Maiden is my favourite metal band of all time).
Grate pod cast.
'Where Eagles Dare' a masterpiece from the beginning to the end
One of my three favourites Iron Maiden albums.
Long life to Maiden ❤
Thinking of it, this is a concept album. Not with a straightforward story, but with a lingering thought pattern about physical, mental and spiritual heights and depths. It starts with a physical and mental peak achievement on Earth and finishes with a spiritual theme in outer space. In between there is mainly misuse of discoveries, physical, mental and spiritual.
Although the brilliance of this album is appreciated, it is still underestimated.
I'm 58 years old. Maiden was my band back in the 80's. I've seen them live more than any other band.
It's almost like I know them personally. I was up front at the Orange Show Pavillion in San Bernardino, Ca and got to bang Steve Harris' bass strings during Run to the Hills. I saw them live three times in one week. The Powerslave tour at the Long Beach Arena was insane!!! Up the Irons!!! ????✊️
Edit: My favorite song of them all is The Prisoner off the Number album.
Amazing album, can play it in my head from beginning to end.
This is a great album, but have you listened to "Somewhere In Time" by Maiden? In my mind one of the best albums ever.
Adrian Smith and Dave Murray are switching back and forth during the lead solos. Also, the play alot of harmonies
It's been some time… didn't remember how much joy it brings to my bones
The movies record.
I remember catching a ride to school with a childhood friend, he had this album and that's what we listened to during that day.
I was bummed that clive was ousted, but as soon as i heard that intro on Eagles, I was reinvested.
I've been a fan of maiden since elementary school. Their sound never Dulls.
Best band, best album, best music ever! Iron Maiden is so much better than ever here! ♨️
If only Revelations and Icarus were a faster tempo…
You recognized the intro on Revelations at the end. The intro is part of a Christian poem/ hymn by G.K. Chesterton.
What an album. I'm enjoying SO MUCH your journey discovering Maiden!!! And learning a so much about music theory. Cheers!!
????
I had all their albums but didn't follow them in the mags. When Where Eagles Dare came on I was like, who's this drummer?! ????
????UP THE IRONS ????
Do not go gentle?
If you can find an image of the inside (or perhaps back) cover of the album you'll find something to either have a little laugh at, or cause to say a slight "ew". I can't say much more than that without spoilers.
Take not thy thunder from us, but take away our pride is from a hymnal by poet, G.K. Chesterton, so "hymn" is probably close enough.
Backing vocals have a bit of Uriah Heep to them, I think. First time I've noticed that. (So now you know what the Heep sound like. Especially that ending.)
Tell me, folks: how can one album be THAT GOOD???? ????
Best Maiden album. PERIOD.
This album is pure gold, back then when 8 songs are just killers, not 13 songs with 10 ten fillers
100%
By far my favorite Maiden album. I had heard a few songs from them before this album came out, but when some of their songs made it on the radio and MTV I was hooked. I saw them on their Live After Death Tour. Still the loudest and one of the best concerts I have ever seen, and I've seen a lot of shows. Revelations is still my favorite track from them. Great reaction. Can't wait till you hear Side 2 y'all.
My absolute favorite Iron Maiden album. Killers and Powerslave are my next favorites.
My first concert and to this day the BEST Maiden album (I think that because it's just a little less polished than Powerslave it actually makes it better). Revelation is one of my all-time faves too Dave.
Happy new year.
Revelations borrows from the Church of England's hymnal, Harris says.
