Cool “Out” Sounding Bass Lick // Bass Lesson with Scott’s Bass Lessons (L#108)

By the time my bass soloing had gotten to the point where I could easily move around the chord tones and chord scales pretty much all over the fingerboard with a decent amount of fluidity, I really started to take more and more interest in the “out” sound that so many great soloists use.

I started hearing it everywhere! Guitarists like Allan Holdsworth and John Scofield, bassists like Skuli Sverrision and Matt Garrison… these guys were using it all over the place within their solos, but I just couldn’t figure out how they were achieving these great out sounding lines.

So, I grabbed my bass and started to transcribe like crazy!

After a few weeks i’d started to figure out exactly how players were approaching the harmony and chords to get that sound I was chasing… but along the way, during my hours and hours of transcribing, I kept hearing a really cool lick people were using over dominant chords. Obviously, I stole it straight away and it’s been in my soloing toolbox ever since 😉

Fast forward to just a few days ago, I was around at Geoff Chalmers’ house (the community manager within the SBL Academy… and my bass geek buddy!) drinking coffee and jamming on our basses and I said “hey Geoff, check out this awesome lick”… I had my camera with me, so immediately we both said “let’s get this down on camera so we can show the SBL posse!”…

So, we grabbed the camera and I shot this short lesson so I could show you this cool lick I use.

If you hear some clanking noises… fear not, it was Geoff making his lunch in the background, lol!

Before you go and check out the lesson, I want you to do me a HUGE favour. I want you to leave a comment below and let me know if you enjoyed this style of “off the cuff” lesson. I’ve got a TON of extra stuff like this I could share with you… where I just grab the camera and hit play… no fancy lights or setup etc. Don’t worry… i’ll always be releasing my slick fancy pants lessons with the cool production… I just want to know if you want some of these in the mix too.

Let me know what you think!

As always, see you in the shed,Scott 🙂

  • SCOTT!!!

My name is Mark and I am totally freaked out. I wrote this line over a decade ago.I have no idea if I can prove it BUT, that’s not the point.
Buddy, I think we are linguistically aligned. So much of what you teach is more of a confirmation than a revelation. Reach out to me Scott. We are connected.
    Warmest Regards,
    Mark Anthony Calderon

  • I LOVE THIS!  Scott, I'm looking for more ways to go 'out' and back in.  Are there more lessons like this?  I always get such a grin on my face when a bass player leaves the norm but ties it back in.  Thanks!  Kris

I maybe a hobbyist bass player so far, but I truly enjoy studying and learning to better my playing and overall musicality. • Can someone explain to me why he's wearing gloves? I'm a guitar player and I wandered across this video just to see what it was and I'm curious

  • Sorry if this has already been discussed but do you wear the glove because of nerve pain in your hand? I have severe nerve pain in my hands as a result of a surgery I had a few years ago and have been struggling with it ever since. Any insight would be much appreciated!! Love you videos :).

  • Scott, the sound of your P Bass is just beyond gorgeous. I didn't know whether to pay attention to the lesson or just sit back and listen to that yummy bass tone! Thank you for all the good information you give. Thanks you to I have improved a lot! =)

  • The flat wounds make it sound slightly like an upright double bass. Also, what's the glove for? Is that just your signature characteristic?

  • Hey Scott, just keep bringing us your great lessons, it doesn't really matter about the production, if your lessons are as useful as this one, you can shoot them in your way home in the sub or in the bus with your phone, these kind of licks are really lifesavers when soloing and even when composing songs, I've wouldn't imagine using D minor flat over C major 7 but it sounds G.R.E.A.T!

Thank you very much man! Keep bringing good music…

  • Dude, you are a great player and a great teacher, I've gotten a lot out of your lessons, and I don't even play bass just guitar.

  • Hey scott.
Do you have a few tips for how I can convert an ordinary 4 string bass for H tune. I know that the bridge needs to be changed with a modified bridge from a 5 string or the old should be sharpened up.
Do you think it will be necessary to switch the pick-up out too?
Thank you for the wonderful videos

  • Why is he wearing a glove on the left hand? Is it to produce a certain kind of sound? I can't imagine it's to make the strings easier on the fingers aha

  • Why are you wearing a glove? You probably have said why in a previous video but i cant find it..

  • Normally I never trust a man with flatwounds, but your the exception. Great tip man thnx.
