D’ Mark Omega Exotic 6 string bass. DEEP Dive!! Headphones Recommended!

Headphones recommended!

Hand-built in Brazil, D’Mark is crafting high end instruments that rival some of the top names in custom luthiery, but at a more affordable price point. The Bass Spot sent me this stunning instrument to review, and after playing it for a couple of weeks to get comfortable with it, here we are. My disclaimer: I’ve been off the 6-string for about 10 years, and just picked up a mid-range Ibanez a few months ago to get my hands and brain back. The mind is willing, but the flesh is weak. Used to be the other way around!.

It was well worth spending the time to get familiar with this bass, while it sounded great through my amp, upon listening back to the audio for this… I’m kind of blown away! This bass sounds fantastic, in part due to the hand-wound D’Mark pickups, which sound amazing in passive mode, but wait until you hear the preamp—a perfect match for the pickups. The preamp adds clarity, and it’s well-tuned EQ really brings out what you need – like finger style articulation, a slap contour, a fat bottom that doesn’t get murky, all this and more.

The woodwork is impeccable, Brazil has beautiful exotic hardwoods, and this bass has Brazilian Mahogany wings, a premium Cedar center block, a 3-piece Maple neck with a Muiracatiara center stripe. The exotic walnut top is highly figured, it’s a work of natural beauty. The single cut design delivers an undeniable B-string at 34″ scale, and the 18mm string spacing is typical of may high end 6-strings. I find it a little wide for my hands, but the tone of this bass made me want to get it together.

These basses are imported by The Bass Spot, check them out at: www.bass-spot.com. They carry several D’Mark models, all beautifully custom crafted, all different woods and tops.

My signal chain for this review was very simple. I went through a Line 6 HX Stomp, using a Clean Preamp setting I created using the “Regal Bass DI” which is their version of a Noble Preamp. Bass and Treble set a 6, Low Cut off, then run into the “Rochester Compressor”, their version of an Ashley CLX-52. Recorded through a Centrance MixerFace direct into an iPhone 13. Other than a low frequency roll off at 40Hz, there is no additional EQ.You are hearing the sound of the bass.
