If you’ve been following my site and videos for a little while now, you’ll know that I have had some of the best and most famous doubletops in the world. This Dake Traphagen from 2013, with a Cedar/Balsa/Cedar doubletop with 250+ year old Brazilian Rosewood (CITIES paperwork included) is simply one of the best instruments I’ve played recently.
While I’ve played some traditional, and lattice braced guitars of Dake’s this is my first experience with his doubletops. I have to ask… are they ALL like this, or is this one particularly special with these spectacular woods and 11 years now of age? I have no idea, but I’ll let the video and recording speak for itself.
Simply put, this thing is a dark, powerful beast, that brightens up when you push it. The sustain is absolutely off the charts and it’s mostly coming from the fundamental.. again, watch the video.
This guitar is in great condition for its age. Nail marks here and there, one string ding below the bridge. No dents, or cracks. Certainly not mint condition, but if you wanted it that way, a simple french polish touch up would do.
Specs:
Cedar Doubletop (balsa interior)
250+ year old Brazilian Rosewood with CITIES paperwork
650mm scale
52mm nut
58mm string spacing at bridge

I concur with the others… I too prefer the longer reviews. Your talking points delve into the nature of the instrument, its tonal characteristics, its background, history, woods, feel and most importantly (and perhaps most subjective)… its essence. This is invaluable for the player/potential buyer. By contrast, some guitar demos by other vendors leave me with little to no idea as to the character of the instrument. I mean… the whole purpose is to familiarize the player with what each instrument has to offer, right? You do a super job at telling each guitar's story from the point of view of a masterful player, artist, and lover of instruments.
Dake is an amazing luthier! I have two of his guitars
Those basses are amazing. Smallman like
That guitars got a tone darker than a blackout. That thing breaths sustain and warmth. What a piece of beauty
Definitely prefer your longer reviews
I love how mindful you are as you describe your guitars for those of us who can't see. It is so kind of you. I'm not a double top enthusiast but this one is quite intriguing with its old braz, and so nice sounding… cool stuff.
I really enjoy your enthusiasm. So whatever feels right to you is fine by me! I just wish I could own both the Traphagens you've had!
gosh that second string tickles my brain
I would love to see more playing/performance!
Wow. Amazing tone!
