David Gilmour “Luck and Strange” Album Review (Is it really his best since Dark Side of thre Moon?)

In this video, I take a deep dive into David Gilmour’s latest album Luck and Strange, his fifth studio release and the first since Rattle That Lock in 2015. Gilmour has described this album as his best work since Dark Side of the Moon, so I’ll be exploring whether it lives up to that bold claim. From his signature guitar tones to the personal involvement of his family—like vocals from his daughter Romany—and even re-used keyboard parts from the late Richard Wright, Luck and Strange blends nostalgia, experimentation, and introspection. Join me as I break down each track, from the mellow instrumentals to the standout solos, and see how this album compares to the rest of Gilmour’s iconic discography. Stick around for my final thoughts and overall rating!

  • Its a great album that suits where he is now – His age, his family and his reflections. Anybody expecting youth and energy then realise where he is in life. The youth is he's daughter but she's there for her Dad to support him and not take centre stage. It sits just right.

  • Did you get the version with the 2 bonus tracks? They are an original Barn Jam of Luck and Strange and Yes, I Have Ghosts (with Romany) that was recorded during COVID in 2020. Scattered and A Single Spark are among my faves – Between Two Points has a very intimate, profound, and sad undertone – it makes me think the song is about domestic violence. I adore this new CD, very happy to have it! You're right it is very much like On an Island. I am in the minority – I love Rattle that Lock!

  • I have to say this. I am a huge Pink Floyd fan. And I love Gilmour's solo work. I only gave this one spin. I found it so terribly slow and boring. The only song I really liked was The Pipers Call. Other than that it just bored me to tears. I usually love a new Gilmour album. But this was not my cup of tea. Maybe it will grow on me with a few more spins . But that was my first opinion of this one.

  • Hi John!!! It's a nice thing to still see classic artists like Gilmour releasing new music…. now it's his best efford since "Dark Side…." i don't know, but that's a long period of music his leaving out!!! I heard the first single and thought it was good, nothing spectacular but in the style a guy at his age and career would like to sound. However i do prefer his solo work over Waters trying to do the same thing over and over……. cheers and be well

  • He and Waters say this with every new album release. It was good, but not OAI good

  • When he says it’s the best album since DSOTM I think he is talking about the creative process of making it.

I was moved by Luck and Strange. More so than other Gilmour albums. The music is very well layered and the lyrics hit me deeply. There were Bossa Nova, RnB and classic rock sounds all throughout. For me it is well done

  • I wish I could be kinder to this effort…but it is a pretty dull and dreary listen…can't see what everyone is raving about. GDANSK made ON AN ISLAND COME ALIVE…but the studio effort felt comatose by comparison…Luck And Strange needs a defibrillator.

  • This has a few good tracks, but for what both fans and David himself suspect is his last will and testament, I think this lacks any real sign of fire to send off a career. C+
