Run for cover????????????
Man that’s some great playing.
I always sanded mine down to basically 50% of the width. I have no idea why they aren't made like this, but then again, not a hard modification to diy with any grinding/sanding tool.
Look at all the different tones I can get from these hand positions! ( Uses a different bass for each example ) lol! Sorry I couldn't resist!
it depends on the material the cover is made of.
The pickup cover messes with the split coil pickups in P basses so they hum a bit. Depending on your rig, the hum might be hard to hear. Straight into an interface it's quite loud, maybe less through a tube amp. This is with a grounded cover too.
GET OFF MY LAWN ????????????????
Great show and tell
The way you looped this video is artful in and of itself ????
thats really nice explained and all those songs you choose …. great stuff!
What are the names of the songs in the video? Does anybody knows?
That 5 string jazz growl was somethin.
I've tried out a bridge cover on a Telecaster guitar and it most definitely changed the sound of the bridge pickup in a way I didn't like. Although I keep both covers on my Precision
What model is the 5 string bass white with tortoise pick guard?
what was the first song
????????????????
You missed out the Top thumb rest years, opposite of the bottom one for the fingers…
Ian! I am very disappointed in you. You missed a crucial! CRUCIAL!!! Preset. You look like a youngy but your mind is slipping with age.
I nutted cum

Since when are YouTube shorts 30 minutes long?
Don’t need that piece of steel cutting into my fingers. ????????
Perfect Song for the precision and thumb ????
So no, the tone dont change, the style you use does make the tone change(duh), like always this clips are some serious clickbait ajajaj
It gets in my way.
What’S the title of the song that you played around 20sec of this short vid?
Was enjoying the video up until the end…he had to drop the dreaded 'in the pocket' BS.
Everytime someone says that I want to hurt myself.
I wish every behsist who yaps about pocket get their mix done by a drummer.
The real purpose of the pickup cover was to help quiet that annoying 60 cycle hum that single coils made in case of poor electrical grounding, lack thereof or radio/neon/appliance transmission and interference. You also have to remember that this was conceived in an era before 3 prong ground plugs and sockets in which what is now part of our current electrical code.
I like the opposite cover layout. Ditch the pickup cover and run the bridge cover
Ian tone Allison killing it with that paramore sound
I learned something new today ????
I hate the cover pickup I was always trying to figure out why is it on here now I know but I will try it again.
Ignoring all of this positioning stuff, the cover does change the tone slightly. The same is true of the Telecaster ashtray.
I love that double high note in "I was Made to Love Her" — I just used it to demonstrate to my sister (who's also my student) what to do when you HAVE to play on the three in a genre that can't support emphasis on the 1 & 3.
Walking through it or doubling the note takes some of the heaviness off. I can't ask him, but I'm pretty sure Jamerson did that because if you just follow the melody and play it once, there's an implied accent on the third beat, which is a violation of "everything's on the one" school of soul bass playing.
That slap 0:53 made my screen shake
I loved this channel

I love Ian’s joy… for bass, for sharing and I hope for life!
Since I use the "floating thumb" technique of string muting, a pickup cover doesn't really work for me.
Ohhhh I have been wondering how Jamerson stabilized that finger of his to play so fast. The pick gaurd makes sense. Maybe i should get one for my P
propose to compare 4 playing positions : uses 4 different basses..
That jazz played behind the cover is the grindy clean everyone should ask for. Not the BS P sound.
Some time ago I saw a video where they compared the tone of a Rickenbacker with the pickup cover installed, vs removed, and there was quite a difference in the sound. Of course, with older Ricks, you had no choice, since the "cover" was actually a horseshoe magnet, and was physically part of the rear pickup.
This seems like it would get in the way of my playing.
Walking on the moon is a killer bass line. I have to educate my thumb to get that stingy Jamaican vibe
WAIT!!! Back in my days at Sadowsky Guitars, we A/B tested with/without pickup covers and noted that there IS a difference! It is very acute, but went to show that when you "shield" a pickup with a steel plate, it effects the signal character of the transducer.
Are the breaded cable better for the bass like the one your using in the video?
I'm sold!
One of my favorite videos from you guys, and that's saying a lot since I watch most of your content. Thanks Ian!
Love a cool a$$ white guy with soul
