What is the effects loop? How do you plug your cables for it? How does the effects loop sound compared to the front end? Do I really need an effects loop?

I’m answering all of these questions in this video to make the Effects Loop easier to understand. I hope my visual and audio examples will help you to understand this concept better.

For a long time, I thought that Effects Loops were complicated, but it is not much harder than understanding pedals order on your pedalboard chain!

If this video was helpful to you, give it a big big big thumbs up!

  • Antoine thank you for this video. Wondered if you could help me with the best way to connect things. I have a Roland JC22 which has a stereo FX loop. I bought this amp because of the FX loop so I want to take advantage of it…plus I prefer playing clean and the Roland JC series are known for their being a clean amp. I do not use distortion, or fuzz or overdrive pedals. Nor do I have a compressed right now. As far as pedals go I only have the following:

a Polytune mini, a Morley volume pedal, a TC Flashback Triple Delay and a Hologram Microcosm.
Right now I have stereo out of the Microcosm into the stereo in of the Delay…. I have the mono out of the delay into the send of the FX loop on the Roland…..now what ? I understand running pedals in parallel is ideal for effects like reverb, delay, chorus where you want to preserve the original tone. Appreciate your suggestions… Thanks.

  • My problem is I got 4 long ass cables coming from my board to my amp head. It looks ridiculous lol.

  • This is the info I was looking for. I use the tubes for light gain overdrive, add an OD pedal (for moments when heavier gain is needed), run it through the front then add the boost and the reverb pedal in the loop. 40 years of playing and it's like an epiphany! Sounds incredible! Thanks so much!

  • I don't understand why the out is actually an in in the end is actually an out just like monitors why don't they just keep it simple who made that s*** up?? Maybe I should cross it off and write out and in maybe they were stoned on hemp back in the day

  • One thing you didn't mention is that the preamp delivers line level, while the guitar chain operates at instrument level.
Reverbs and mods are meant to operate at line levels.

  • This is the best explanation for the effects loop I’ve seen and you cleared it up in less than 2 minutes. It is so much more simpler than I thought. I watched so many other videos and it was just going in one ear and out the other due to all the technological terms people were using. Thank you!

  • Antoine. I have just bought a looper pedal and an electro-harmonix Canyon pedal. My amp does not have an fx loop built in. How do I set these up, please? Also, when you talk about the amp being clean, do you mean no reverb or after effects? Thanks.

  • Can you correct my pedal chain from guitar to: vol/wah, tuner, metal distorion, crunch distortion, mosky sol198 mulftifx with a distortion, overdrive, fx loop on the center, delay and reverb, to noise gate to amp input, my modulation pedal (chorus, phaser, flanger and vibrato) is connected to the send and return of the mosky sol198. Can you please help me to arrange order of my chain, may amp has fx loop.

So in short all of my effects are in front of the amp if im not mistaken?

  • That "speaker" cable hes using looks suspiciously mike his instrumenr cables in the send… Kids please DO NOT use instrumenr cables to connect your amp to youe cabinet, universally STUPID!!!!
