Ernie Ball Slinky Cobalt 40-95’s Review – The Best Bass Strings Ever Made.

It’s hard to talk these strings up without sounding super clickbait-y. Not paid by Ernie Ball or Belfield Music but not because I have integrity or anything, just because they never asked me.

Time stamps:
2:55 – Playing with a pick
4:22 – Playing with fingers
6:49 – Chords examples
7:41 – Slap examples
13:22 – Comparing old strings vs new strings
16:43 – Price

  • I find the strings are too boomy. Esp if you have an active bass. For a passive bass I guess they are ok but as far as an active goes the low end becomes to boomy around 60-100hz.

  • I like that weird slap thing youre doing playing the psychobilly songs, never seen that and it sounds cool. The tone is killer too.

  • I use the .100 – .045 gauge Ernie Ball Cobalt flatwounds on almost all of my 19 Long scale bass guitars. I love the tone and feel of them. The only downside I found is when I played a gig in 90° humid weather they felt like razor blades. I had to use either baby powder or finger ease. Other than that they're the best string around. I M O.

  • Any chance could get you to pit the tabs down for 9 lives? I dont have any software and ive always wanted to play it on my upright

  • yes to that! I've used both the Slinkys and the Cobalts. Either are great… but the Cobalts are the BOMB.

  • Love the 2725 gauge. I often get asked why I play a light gauge as a bass player and I let them know that I let the pickup, strings and amp do most of the work and these are great.

  • Sir I have been slapping the bass for a decade now and your lobster claw slap and pop technique ( 9:53 ) completely blew my mind!

Is it possible to learn such a power?

  • Usualy you want and need the mids to cut through a band mix!!…so I don't get it!!…I find they lack caracter!!…

  • HILARIOUS!!!
Was thinking about getting back into bass playing, guitar was a bit easier on my arthritic hand. But nothing sounds like a good bassline played on a REAL bass. Lighter gauge bass strings may be the answer for me. You certainly made them sound good, great review!!

  • Man thank you for your video, I bought some, they are a total game changer. To the point I need to teach my self how to play lighter, they are the brightest bass strings ever,I don't have to play half as hard, slap pop is a whole different game with these.

  • I personally like the way your bass sounds with these strings . If you want a little bit hotter output . Get a cheap Phillips head screwdriver and turn counter clockwise . Only reason I say is because I love to experiment with pickup tones on my bass .

  • Man here in Cali Colombia is the same thing… Its almost impossible to find different guitar or bass sets…… You just get tired and prefer buying them online even if its way more expensive… Damn

  • Nice tone. Nice playing. Yeah. The EB Cobalts are the best. Listen to the low E on the Cobalts. They have the nice PUNCH and the nice BREAKUP we all love…It took a few years of me A/b-ing them with my favorite strings. But they are the BEST…

  • i still don"t know if i prefer 40-95 or 45-100. one one hand 40-95 is so confortable for your fretting hand but i prefer a higher tension for my picking hand, it allow me to play fast fingerstyle and double-thumb more easily i find. but harmonic and tapping sound better on 40-95. maybe i will just experement will different 40-95 string to see which was has the highest tension among them.

  • In my case they are not so mid scooped such as other brand steel strings. They give me quite a nice low mid bump.

  • I'm a new player and I ordered these today! I'm super excited to get them cuz mine now are just bad and too thicc for my teenager hands. Great review!

  • Been with my missus for about 18 months now. She was so bright and sparkly when I met her, but now she's just woody and dull. Wait, you've given me an idea…

  • Great tone playing alone, that scooped sound is always dynamic and desirable. But playing live with a guitar players using Les Paul's and Strats you will most likely get buried in the mix. I hate upping my mids but it's the only way to push through that wall of Marshals.

  • Enjoyed this VID. You have a very "alive" presence when doing this and makes for easy viewing. Looking at Cobalts for my Sandberg VM4. Currently using the La Bella Low Tensions but they are dull compared what i'm hearing here. Nice one.

  • well i thought i was bit weird searching for thinner strings while playing bass, but after seeing this now i'm convinced! thanks….i tried to find ernie ball cobalt in my country but eventually i chose blue steel instead

  • When I started slapping I was convinced thicker strings = better slap, I was dead wrong. These are on my shopping list! Nice review, and nice colors in the vid!
