Expensive vs. Cheap Martin Acoustic Guitars | 000-X1 vs. 000-42
Today we’re back with another installment of our “Expensive vs. Cheap” guitar series, highlighting two Martins that are both great in their own right. The 000-X1 has been discontinued, but its price point and build are still available in their 000-X2E. At about 10x the cost, however, is the Martin 000-42: a gorgeous piece of craftsmanship that embodies the class of the Martin name. Both are great Martin 000’s, but can you hear a 10x difference? Let us know in the comments!

Yeah I can hear the difference my Yamaha sounds better….
That 600.00 Martin, really sucks, compared to a FG830 Yamaha, for $350, unless you just want a cheap overpriced Martin, that doesn't sound for shat , and just want the word Martin on the headstock…. Then by all means, buy one…. If you want a guitar that looks good and sounds good, and the build quality is better than the $600 Martin, then buy the Yamaha FG 830 for around half the money… No I'm not a Martin hater, I own a 1962 d18 Martin, in a 1949 j50 Gibson, but my Yamaha FG 830, put those six and eight hundred dollar martins under the bus. One other thing I will add, you must get the Martin set up before you leave the store, unless you know how to set the action on the guitar yourself. Because the action right out of the box on those martins are terrible…. Amazing how a 350 dollar Yamaha is set up better than a 600 dollar Martin out of the box… Martin…. Only in it for the name….
There are no "cheap" Martins, spanky.
Big difference. The cheaper one in tinny, the more expensive is rich and warm.
Long story short – Yes there is a difference – the expensive one sounds way better. More resonant, brighter, warmer low end with more clarity, and greater clarity across all the strings in general when playing chords. It even sounds more touch sensitive and responsive when finger picking. Unlike electric guitars, your investment goes way further with acoustic guitars. As the presenter said, when you start using actual solid woods instead of laminate, it's a different world.
No one but Martin can really give you full upgrade in quality- feel, setup, and insane materials. And if third world builders can do the job, so be it. If you like minimal requirements- go for the Mexican made, bolted neck w fake wood cover over the neck to block joint- Godspeed…enjoy.
I have a 50 year old martin six string all birch guitar in mint condition what would this one be worth i payed anout 900 candian formit about 45 to 50 years ago thanks
Obviously the 6k model sounds better but I’ll gladly take that X series too. Both beautiful instruments.
I closed my eyes during playing so didn't see which he was playing, and maybe this shows my limitation.. but I thought the 'cheap' was the expensive. Sounded much more.. together. Guess I shouldn't fork out 6 grand for a guitar.
The cheap one sounds better
shocker the more expensive sounds way better
Ask yourself if you are a good enough player, because that's what it takes for a guitar to sound good. If you have work to do, don't spend too much $ on your guitar, it won't replace practice. Take note in your listening how much presence the acoustic guitars even have on so many recordings as well, might help if you have a choice to make. Also, for the most part, nobody else gives a crap about your guitar, if that helps.
I cant tell the difference
What’s this riff called
tony polecastro v2
I have a HD-28 that I bought in Bath England, in 1980 for very liitle money, as the shop had no idea what it had. It's a' '77, IRW and Spruce, and our esteemed Canadian luthier, Eiichi Ishikawa. has worked on it and told me that, if I ever want to sell it, it's the best HD-28 he's ever heard. As he'd heard all the BRW models, I took that as a huge endorsement. I will never sell this guitar…..
10x is NOT a bit much. it is a pure joke. the normal person cannot tell the difference in sound. thanks for revealing the "truth".
The fancy Martin is for someone that likes expensive creams and lotions? ????
…I laughed out loud at that…
There's definitely a difference, but they both sound good
Comparison and review aside, you are a phenomenal player ????
Yes there is a difference in sound…;)>
The 5 thousand guitar has a brighter and more open tone, than the 5 hundred, but the cheaper one sounds very descent, too! I wouldn't call it awful in no way.
The cheaper sounded better. More oomph. More presence.
I have the 000-42 Modern deluxe. It is unbelievable.
Of course the 000-42 sounds better. But 10x better? I think not. For the difference in price, I cannot believe how well the x series sounds.
