Here’s an in-depth review of the Ibanez Genesis Collection RG550 Electric Guitar. I picked this up a few months ago for an 80s hair metal cover band I joined, and I wanted to talk a little bit about my thoughts on the guitar. Let me know if you have any questions!

  • I had to replace the springs with the higher tension Ibanez ones because they were ringing a lot. Still absolutely killer guitars tho, worth every penny

  • in real life does the road flare red look red, or more orange?
I know how notoriously hard it is to photograph neon colors, and its important for my buying decision to know.
Thanks for the help in advance!

  • The most cristal and artificial sound of all the other guitars ,first generation RG 570 had more natural sounds pick up combination

  • I had to get me one of them things. Just beautiful. Road flare red. I am very happy with it. It is super versatile. You are not just restricted to metal in spite of how it looks. It absolutely sounds killer when overdriven and distorted. But, the clean tones of those pickups are gorgeous. You can do jazz and blues with it just fine. Works extremely well with ballads if you run it through a chorus. I even tried some rockabilly licks on that middle pickup. Sounded pretty damn good.

  • One month playing my RG550 I have to say it is NOT hype, these are excellent guitars. My complaint is the same as I've read online so many times They could have smoothed out the fret ends lol that's a minor issue that will get resolved when I do my first string change on it. Maybe the heel is a little rough as well. You have to plug these in to really appreciate them, they come set up great and these stock V7 V8 pick ups sound pretty good. Overall I'd give the RG 550 9.3 out of 10. That's a 9.3 on a thousand dollar guitar Get one! Small edit after playing 1 year, the "heel" is a little bulky when playing the higher frets but other than that I can't say anything bad about this guitar.

  • Don’t waste money and time replacing pick ups, the difference will be minimal. The stock pick ups are actually great. Had mine over 2 years now. I was around when these first came out and they were iconic axes back in the day used by all the local guitarists . The playability is super fast and the trem is the best I’ve ever used. It’s made in Japan and engineered to perfection. You will feel the top quality A1 workmanship from the moment you pick it up.

  • Mine arrived today and after reading reviews saying the pickups need upgrading I can disagree.
The standard pickups are really really good. Even the middle single coil packs enough punch.
Only query I have is regarding the trem arm, how much does it need to be pushed in? All the way or just enough to hold tight.

  • Pickups don't sound as wank as you said they were. I quite like the fullness. Can always tweak the EQ to get a higher mid

  • Lol unless I'm mistaken I have that same Les Paul print behind you. Does it also bother you that the frets are all wrong?

  • Very clear and no-nonsense review of what really matters! Liked your video. :). I have been on a guitar hiatus since my uni days and am now really wanting to get back into it. Dusted my old RX60 and giving myself six months to get back to it before I decide to sink some cold hard cash into this baby.

  • Excellent video. Thanks very much. What is the name of the song where the first distorted riff is taken from? Would like to learn it.
    Thank you.

  • Noob question, I wanted one of these in purple but the only model they had was an RG55ODX in laser blue the DX seemingly stands for de-luxe in that the fretboard is made from 'granadillo' wood which I have never heard of plus includes 'sharksteeth' fret inlays. However can someone please help explain to me what model of 'floating bridge' should ship with such a guitar, help greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • You needed a new guitar because of different tunings. Lots of 80's metal is tuned half-step down. So both are needed, and actually, you may need another if you play any in drop D.

  • Sorry, but AANJ is on their highest end models as well. That horrid neck plate it the homage of their design back in the 80s. It is the only reason for me to not buy this guitar. Otherwise it is a very very nice axe. Cheers

  • Bought the yellow one and was blown away with how it played and felt, never had the original edge tremolo before. Smoothest trem ever! Stays in tune better than any guitar I’ve ever owned
