In this video, Sam takes a look at the Fender Mustang PJ bass, a cool looking 30″ short-scale bass that blends classic styling with modern features and playability. The specs of this bass are all classic Fender…Alder body, bolt on Maple Neck (with “modern C” profile), vintage style open gear tuners and a 4 saddle bridge. But whereas previous models featured a Rosewood fingerboard, this new version is fitted with a Pau Ferro fretboard, the type of wood that Fender are now using as an alternative to Rosewood, as it shares a similar appearance, density and tone.

Electronically, the Mustang bass is fitted with a combination of both P-Bass and Jazz bass single-coil pickups (hence the “PJ”), offering a huge range of tonal options.

  • The early ones of this series (Known as the Offset series) of Basses had Rosewood fretboards. They have now all been discontinued. Fender do still make a Mexican Mustang PJ Bass however its now part of the Player series.

  • Bought this bass as my 1st bass after playing guitar for 12 yrs. Im impressed of how nice it plays and how good it sounds. Lots of diversity with the pickup switch and tone knob and it's really easy to slap with compared to many other basses ive tried.

  • The bass player in Nazareth played a Mustang bass in the 1970s. I knew f*ck all about guitars back then but white Gibson SG Customs, Violin basses and Rickenbacker basses caught my eye then.

  • Great vid. Simple riffs to get a sense of the tones.  Good description too.  Does anyone know how it balances – any neck dive?

  • I just love SS basses. Played one at GC. Better than my Sq Jag SS but not as good and not as much low end as my SG bass. But price wise the Mustang falls right between the 2. The only thing I DONT like about the SG is the bridge. The Mustang is about the same quality as a typical MIM Fender…I'd say the cheapest "good enough quality" SS bass out there, but I haven't played a Gretsch or a few of the other ones out there.
