Fender PJ Bass Modded with Musicman Humbucker

Here is a quick review/demo of my modded P Bass. I decided to get the bass refinished to a new shade of green, modded for a Musicman humbucker, and add a HipShot Drop Tuner. Here is all the gear I used below:

Fender Special Edition Deluxe PJ Bass (Guitarcenter/Musician’s Friend exclusive)
Seymour Duncan SPB-3
Seymour Duncan SMB-4D
Hipshot BT7 Bass Xtender

Overall the labor and parts cost about $800 which is pretty reasonable. Note that most refinishes in the area are usually $400 minimum and the cost of the parts alone were $250. The bass now has a bold green finish, the humbucker make the bass much more versatile, and the HipShot tuner makes drop tuning so convenient. Enjoy the video!

  • Sadly I think the bass looked and sounded better before. There is a lot of voodoo around changing pickups in bass guitars, I have done loads of it. Many different pickups from many different brands. It has taken me to my late fifties to realise that they really don’t make a lot of difference. Playing in a band scenario in a full mix. There is no difference, fact! The audience can’t hear it …..and don’t care. A half decent stock bass set up correctly with good strings will sound great….end of. Don’t waste your money folks.

  • Am I the only one not liking the PH fingerstyle? It is very boomy and undefined in low mids. Definetly needs more EQ tweaking than PJ or either pickup on its own.

  • Hmm, just seems to boost the clicky highs and maybe some super low, like 60k. Honestly, I think any pickup that close to the bridge is going to sound like garbage. I'd sooner put it next to the neck just or swap out the P pickup entirely… but then you'd have a Stingray ????

  • Great playing & demo. About to do this mod to my Squier 5 & upgrading the machine heads as well. Looking forward to it

  • I was randomly curious to see what a humbucker in a Pbass would sound like and it turns out you modded the exact bass I have and was wondering about haha. Well done man thats awesome!

  • Yo these basses sound pretty sick in PJ form, no lie. But that sound is everywhere and sometimes, you want for more. This is a great mod, man. That's a satisfying growl you get now.

  • If you go to AE guitars you can have it custom made like this. They give you lots of options. I ordered a Candy Apple Red P bass (alder) with the P pickup & MM pickup routes. You can pick different colors, nitro or poly or satin finishes. They got lots of different colors to choose from too. It was also under $250. You can’t beat that. All Fender specs.

  • This is a very nice bass! You have a good taste.
What if you put a switch to make the humbucker single? Would it sound again like a j pickup to keep the PJ config too?

  • Currently working on something similar. Good to hear the sound of a passive MM in the bridge. Can't wait to finish it.

  • The one thing I would've done differently is that I would've had the pickup installed before having it painted. How nerve racking it must of been to try and preserve a brand new paint job while routing a pocket for the pickup. Your poor tech ????????

  • That's an AWESOME green!! Great improvement from the original shade. Loved the punchy tone from the MM hb. I tend to get as much options I can from mods and I end up overcomplicating things but… how about a switch for series / parallel / split for the MM?

  • I’ve just had similar done but not got it back yet. I can’t wait to hear it so that’s why I am here. The bridge on yours sounds like jazz but fuller. I think that the P bass is just the best sound and could be used all night but it is nice to have something different available. I think it’s great and I hope mine sounds as good ????

  • I did the same thing to my Squier. First put 1/4 pound PUs in ,but the neck PU was still puny so I put in a mm style.
