First Time Hearing INFECTIOUS GROOVES! Bass Teacher REACTS to “Violent and Funky” & Rob Trujillo

➡️ I’m a huge Metallica fan—and as much as I’ve loved Robert Trujillo in their lineup—I’ve slacked on hearing any of his earlier work with Suicidal Tendencies and Infectious Grooves. I’ve been looking forward to this highly-requested track, and it honestly perplexed my expectations quite a bit. I discuss why I prefer Rob’s tone on this track over any of his Metallica releases, how to play this insanely-fast groove using the three-finger technique, Rob’s insane stamina behind his heavy-handed chops, the unique take the band has on musical “comedy”, and much more!

  • Love your channel and music knowledge. Check out a unknown band called Groovezilla track called Zilla Groove!

  • To know the whole story, one must begin in the beginning. Suicidal Tenancies. The tone shifts and delivery between the two projects is all about the BASS! Each band sounds almost exactly the same. Each bands vocals sound almost exactly the same except the bass play is the "character" that the rest of the band dances and jokes around. Suicidal Tendencies is a serious band with heavy content and they used their band to reach out to troubled people and stick them in mosh pit/safespace. Infectious Grooves was them just having a blast without the responsibility they took up in ST.

  • Sitting here with my plank trying to play along. That main verse ruff, easy peasy lemon squeezy with a pick…….but what an amazing exercise for three finger technique, I'm, absolutely gonna stick at it until I'm up to speed.
(More Hooky please, for some much easier but equally genius stuff 😀 )

  • Rob went into some interviews for guitar player back in the day. He literally blew their minds with his skill levels. Especially considering their younger gang backgrounds! He is a national icon.

  • Im so glad to have grown up in the 90's, so much music all crammed together, and it worked, to have, funk intro, metal verse, with a rap sample, crowd shouting chorus before the bridge. Can really hear the Public Enemy influence on the verse. Rob has always been a beast, supposedly has no finger prints.

  • I was just wondering the other day if you've heard Infectious Grooves. Love em! Punk It Up is fantastic!

  • your wife has gotta be in heaven with as fast as those fingers move. Also, nice video! Rob is way more capable than what Metallica bass parts suggest

  • TRUJILLO IS TOO GOOD FOR METALLICA IMO, HE HAS SKILLS THAT SADLY HE CAN´T SHOW PLAYING WITH A TOO CONVENTIONAL BAND LIKE METALLICA, ALSO I HAVE TO SAY THAT ROB ADDED NOTHING TO ´TALLICA SINCE HE´S IN THE BAND, NOR EVEN LIVE, JASON NEWSTED AT LEAST HAD AN AMAZING LIVE PRESENCE

  • The format of this song always reminded me of a skit on the show Hee Haw where they would play music and pause through out for quick jokes (usually from two people randomly popping up in a corn field). The music then becomes the laugh track/release after the comedic line hits.

  • ST didn't have the slaps before Rob joined. Infectious Grooves was a side-project that took them up to a daft level.

There were a whole lot of funky-bass driven metal bands around the late 80s-early 90s, kind of kicking off with early RHCP & Faith No More but mixed up with thrash. A lot of it was crap but there were some gems.

  • Rob Trujillo is a legend. I always dug his music with Infectious Grooves, maybe more than Metallica.
Next you gotta check out a song called Money’s Not an Issue by a band called The Vandals. It’s a punk song with a “lead bass” part. It rips.

  • 4:07 it sounds like the breakdown section from Angel of death by slayer. Maybe even an interpolation of the sample that Public Enemy did. Not exactly though. Definitely sounds like it's inspired by the angel of death breakdown.

  • This is certainly not the best example of a great bass line from Infectious Grooves. Try "Punk it Up", or "Dont Stop, Spread the Jam".

  • Don’t watch the video if your analysing the music. The visuals might colour your perception, yes there’s visual similarities with Primus but I wouldn’t say they’re musically very similar.

  • He made perfect sense for joining metallica. Who else is going to play songs off kill em all, ride the lightning and master of puppets live. Most people go to see them for those songs. Not their new stuff.

  • I've seen Rob 3times live. I've seen Metallica 3times live. I've never seen Rob in Metallica.????
