Free Bass Play-Along – “Mambo Influence” /// Scott’s Bass Lessons

Learning and studying Latin-style bass lines can be a fantastic way to develop the rhythmic side of your bass playing.
Latin jazz, salsa and timba all stem from Latin and African rhythms – I’m simply crazy for the stuff, and studying it has had a profound effect on my bass playing.
So, I thought it’d be fun to share a Latin-style bass play-along from the Academy with you… so you can give it a go yourself!
I’ve recorded a video of me performing the song as a reference for you. You can download the backing track (without bass) and lead sheet below.
In case you want to investigate this style of music a little more, you need to check these bass players out:
– Israel “Cachao” Lopez
– John Benitez
– Andy Gonzalez
– John Peña
– Alain Perez
– Anthony Jackson (love his playing with Michel Camillo)
– Lincoln Goines
– Oscar Cartaya
– Alvaro Benavides (check him out with the Pedrito Martinez Group)
– Panagiotis Andreou
As always, see you in the shed…
Scott 🙂

Hey great! The tab link is down! Do you have tab notation link?
Latin jazz bass playing is amazing!
This is a composition of the great Chucho Valdés.
waooo you sound good pure latin felling
I have seen scott played a few times latin music and honestly he has one of the best groove i've seen and much better and clean than other latin bass players . . honestly !! i'm not kidding . .real latin bass groose and real clean and clear . . Thank you scott, you can be our 2nd or 1st great bass player in salsa genre like SAL CUEVAS. i SURE WOULD LIKE TO SEE YOU PLAYING WITH PAPO LUCA, ONE OF OUR REAL BEST PIANO PLAYER IN LATIN MUSIC.
YES! Thank you, Scott.
It's exactly what every bass player who is playing this style needs to learn. First time through you played the basic foundation of this killer groove, then a bit more free later, never losing the foundation. So many jazz players don't understand that.
Cool! More latin stuff, please, Scott. Superb course about Cuban music with Oscar Stagnaro. Please, do me a favour, lad: A bit more of this! Ta!
Cuban music is one of the hardest to get a grasp on for a bass player because the beat isn't as intuitive as most western music
You nailed the feel bro
sounds like a weird midi tumbao triggered by iReal book charts
How do like this more? Anyway, thank you!
Excellent. What I hear in Latin bass is that it must hit before the one.
Phenomenal bass player

I am surprised that you Salvador Cuevas is not on your list of incredible bass players (Eyes Without A Face)
Finally a non-hispanic bassist playing some cuban groove ????????????????????.
Thank you so very much Sr. God bless you.
you forgot CARLOS DEL PUERTO sr AND CARLITOS DEL PUERTO jr
That was some beautiful bass playing. Perfect interaction between the bass and the lead. You really took it there on that. Wow, if I could choose a bassist. You are an incredible bass player. Keep up the amazing work, you are great at what you do, and easily one of the best I've ever heard.
????????????????????????????????
Geez laweez some serious grooving. Sweet Mamba!
Kinda sounds like a El Grand Combo groove like Un
Verano en Nueva York
*Influenced Mambo
Where do i get the chords of this playalong !!???
Scott, these bass players are really interesting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nl030W3nxdM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p72R59wgLOo&t=448s
this is awesome….have you heard of a bassist named Sal Cuevas? he played bass for the Fania All stars (Salsa bands) in the 1980's. He was also the first to bring smashing a bass on the stage in the latin scene in NYC.
Nice
Wow not expecting such SABOR ( FLAVOR ) !!!!
Soo Nice!! This feeling is absolutely Awesome..
I don't get why there even are 11 thumbs down, but whatever… this was a great video and a great performance! I like your channel, Scott, I learn meaningful stuff. Greetings from México
