In this funk guitar lesson you will learn 4 ways to play one of the most popular funk guitar chord progressions the ivm – vm – im. Just a few songs that include this progression are “Let’s Groove” by Earth, Wind & Fire – “Ladies Night” by Kool & The Gang – and “Ain’t No Stopping Us Now” by McFadden & Whitehead. In this lesson you will learn 4 different ways of approaching the rhythm guitar with these chord changes.
1:13 Pattern #1 Learn to play the chord progression in Nile Rodgers style.
3:22 Pattern #2 Learn the rhythm that used these changes on “Ain’t No Stopping Us Now”.
4:36 Pattern #3 Learn to strip down the chords to just 3rds and how to embellish with neighboring intervals.
7:50 Pattern #4 Get the full breakdown of the rhythm on the video intro – a super funky take on the progression using bass notes with the thumb.

Still trying to figure out how to get the *pew-pew*s… ????
useless video
This is excellent!
I’m personally struggling with Pattern #3. I understand high E string should be muted, probably with the pinky but when strumming dead strings, I still hear the high E ringing.
Genial.
I just end up playing Ska any time I try to play funk
Great video, but regarding 3:45 Is that not just simply a C major chord? How can this be read as a voicing of Am7? It doesn't even have an A anymore
"down to this shape" what chord is it? lol
I don't play guitar but this is very help for me mimicking how one sounds with MIDI, very nice tutorial.
4:15
So detailed and clear! Thank you.
Awesome stuff! What model guitar is that? Can't make out the name on the headstock (other than that Im pretty sure its not Fender) Love the tone.
For me, a good funk rhythm guitar immediately gets noticed and enjoyed. Nice no b.s. lesson. Thanks. Had to subscribe.
PEACE from Philadelphia

Bass player here making a first entry into funk guitar. Always wondered what you lot were up to! Great lesson, very useful. Thanks!! 🙂
Insta subscribed. Thank you for all the work and knowledge!! Greetings from Germany.
Great lesson. All the tasty bits you need to Funk it Up in a short, concise video. Love it! Funk ain't that complicated, but tricky to execute properly. Great job on breaking down the progressions. Thanks a lot for the video.
Just discovered this lesson, I love it! Gotta learn this! Question; can you tell me where the backing track is from, I’d really like to play along to it once I have it dialled in. Great work Rick ????
Someone please tell me what kind of pickups he’s rockin on that telly
Exactly the lesson I needed thank u so much
One of the best funk rhythm lessons I seen. Many focus on just one chord shape played with different rhythm patterns.
Man, you were swingin' HARD!
I LIKE IT!
I don’t get a very loud tone when I scratch my strings. Is it the single coil or the amp settings that give it such a pronounced sound?
Brilliant
Awesome rhythm I needed something like this to learn and put into a song I am making.
Great video!!!! ????????
Funk Junction!
Love the lesson but I covert that Tele of yours. Gorgeous!
This is the lesson I been praying for… Who says prayers don't get answered? Where y'all now?
Are those Franlin Pickups in your Tele? Thanks
What brand/size/gauge guitar picks do you use? Excellent lesson and playing. Thanks
Great stuff. Thanks so much. Shally
Great licks!
3 and 4 remind me that I don't get everything I can out of my rhythms. There's always a way to spice things up.
Do you make the backing tracks?
Great lesson Rick. I'll have to give this a try over the weekend. Cheers.
I love your lessons very much! I have a question, is there a sad funk? How can you play it on guitar?
