Gear Rundown with Ed Friedland of the Mavericks /// Scott’s Bass Lessons
To check out Ed’s “Walking Bass Bootcamp” click here: http://bit.ly/2x5boR8
While Ed Friedland (one of our regular faculty members here at the Academy) was on tour with The Mavericks he was kind enough to invite us backstage and give us the full low-down (pun intended!) on what gear he’s using and the different approaches he uses on a gig such as this.
Ed does regular live stream seminars in the Academy here at SBL, as well as having his own ‘walking bass bootcamp’ that we produced together.
As always, see you in the shed…
Scott 🙂

Ed is the best!
I GREW UP on Bass Whisperer vids, Ed is awesome
according to the website chadwick folding basses are not made anymore. how come??
Boston guy. Great book "Building Walking Basslines" too.
What make is that blonde double bass? They never actually said at the beginning. I assume it’s a removable neck plywood bass but what kind?
Awsome! It's fun to have videos about the Upright Bass on this channel! Keep doing more like that too! 😀
Anyone know if he is playing the hybrid model (with the carved top) in this video or the standard model?
Is that a 3/4 or 4/4 size bass??
Davonte ware uprigth Bass
I just saw the Mavericks show last night. Ed is right. The sound was absolutely huge. Perhaps just a bit too muddy but I'm guessing that was an issue with the house.
0:34 Ed emerges from the emergenzy door
I've been playing Greenboy cabs for 6 years now. And, I'll never, EVER play thru ANYTHING else. My single Greenboy cab can blow the very biggest of bass/guitar rigs completely outta the water. And, the tone is to die for.
Yay! My favourite two bass educators one the same video!
In my opinion Ed Is one of the best ambassadors for the bass profession! He's well spoken, intelligent, well rounded and I value his opinion on gear and equipment. WellDone!
OK new to all this. Guitarist here.. tell me all I need to know..how much does one cost, where can I get a decent one, what is a good brand and price, how to amplify it for gigs, everything I need to know thanks..
What doesn't he have at home.
If I'm ever feeling down in life, I watch Ed Friedland's review of the MXR El Grande bass pedal from almost a decade ago on YouTube. It's super cheesy, but he uses some editing effects midway through the video that always make me chuckle.
When I first got to college, older adults would ask what I wanted to do with a jazz performance degree (I subsequently changed degrees). I'd always respond with "I want to be Ed Friedland when I grow up," and that's still true today.
Great guy, player and teacher! I've learned so much from reading his columns in Bassplayer alone, since I was a teenager! I've kept all the copies (from the first issue ('89/'90?). Later off course I watched all his Bass Whisperer video's on Youtube too.
James intveld!
I think I've watched all of Ed's bass reviews
#thebasswhisper
Nice to hear Ed but you never answered the obvious question which plagues so many…..how does he limit feedback when playing at volume?
please more gear rundowns!
He's touring? So that's why we ain't getting new video on the basswhisperer channel
Ed is a monster on electric as well! The Greenboy cabs are the best speaker cab I have ever used for bass guitar.
Such a cool guy. Always liked Ed as a communicator and a player.
Big thanks to Ed for doing the video and to Scott for putting it together. Ed's sounding awesome and his rig sounded IMENSE at the show that night! Cheers Geoff 🙂
such a legend
It's a trip to watch a video featuring a Chadwick with my feet propped on my Chadwick case…
I thought about it so now I did it, streamed the bass clip in a pitch software. It turns out it's about 15 to 40% off pitch. I wondered about the fretless playing. Sounds ok but if it was a vocals it wouldn't fly without editing. Great guy and great portable bass, never know it existed. Make a rundown on the U-bass, it interests me a lot with the short neck. Must have crazy fat strings.
Ed super deluxe great guest teacher at SBL!!
You talked about whether electric would have been appropriate for the gig, but you didn't really cover an electric upright. Seems like something like an NS or a Clevinger or whatnot would be easier to travel with, and might also eliminate feedback worries with the high volume levels you mentioned. Was it a tone preference or a playability preference that caused you to stick with the acoustic?
That dude is so cool 😀 haha
Ed, do some whisperer reviews!
Great to see Geoff out and about 🙂 and what a cool bass!
The bass whisperer babyyy!
