Get the BEST Soldano TONE on Your Boss Katana Artist Gen 3!

In today’s video, Paul from The Studio Rats is seeing if it is possible to dial in a Soldano SLO tone using the new Boss Katana Artist GEN 3.

My favorite High gain guitar amp is the Soldano SLO, its one of those desert island amps that I’ve lusted after since the 1980’s when it first came out. Arguably the Boss Katana is a more versatile amp with its multiple channels and effects, but can it live up to the mighty Soldano?

  • the fact is using either live would have no difference to our hearing! none! i sampled my musician buddies and they …. agreed

  • I have the Katana Gen 3 Artist combo and I've been using the power amp in with my ToneX pedal and it's glorious. The fact that you can also emulate the types of tones you are getting with just the Katana is mind blowing. Kudos to BOSS for always pushing the boundaries, and also to you for giving us these awesome videos.

  • I'm new to the Katana, i seen Paul add more volume to achieve the tone – does this mean the katana has to be pushed louder like a valve amp, or can it be used at home friendly volumes?

  • Not having to worry about tubes is easily worth the minor tone difference, in my opinion. Another really cool head that I use is the Yamaha THR100.

  • Will you do a comprehensive review on the artist Paul so not just highlighting select tones and how to build them but like a full fat 20 min long form this is all the amp has to offer type video?

  • The crazy thing is… you are comparing a $4,000 SLO, to a $370 Katana.
And the Katana sounds VERY CLOSE to the SLO! ( For $750, you could buy TWO Katana's, and have a stereo rig. )
Katana is loaded with effects. SLO has no effects.

  • Cheers Paul I’m probably going to pick one of these up would you recommend going for the amp head and picking up a separate amp or going for the complete amp?

  • I suspect the difference would be substantial as the volume increases, my grandson plays in 3 metal bands and uses a Mesa Dual rectifier into a 2 x 12 or a 4 x 12 with v30's because he has to tear down and setup 3-5 times a week, I bought him a 100-watt Katana thinking it would be OK for practice and he could just leave it in the trunk of his car, and use the Mesa for gigs and Katana for practice, long story short it doesn't have anywhere near the low end or power of the Mesa….not even close. He used it once. Having said that I played it and thought it sounded OK, not great but I much prefer using my Marshall DSL 40. He likes the sound of a Mesa; I like the sound of a Marshall, and the Katana doesn't have a sound of its own so you have to measure it by how close it can come to sounding like so other amp, that should tell you all you need to know.

  • I’ve narrowed down to Paul, Rabbea and Pete Thorn for product videos, especially the modelers. Just so professional, concise and informative.

  • Paul can you achieve that tone out of the GX100 do you think? and what was your signal chain in this video? Thanks for any help or info you can give. Watching from the states and love your content.

  • Could you please give some insight into the tone controls on your guitar possibly with a Stratocaster/Tele style as well? I would love that. Ty….

  • In my opinion I think the katana is doing a great job emulating the soldano sound but there's nothing like that spongey tube feel and sound. Kudos to the katana, I will buy one.

  • Wow, surprisingly versatile! Seems like there’s no excuse for bad tone nowadays.

  • Hey, compare the prizes of that katana to the SLO. The SLO looks cooler on stage but has less than 10% of the features the katana offers.

  • Heresy. I preferred the recorded sound of the Katana, but expect if actually in the room and playing, I’d be stating the opposite.

  • Awesome. Definitely in the same ballpark, nearly identical. SLO slightly darker, but I prefer brighter tones myself, so this will be perfect. Thank you!

  • I'm listening to this through good PA speakers and I can say the difference is night and day. The Katana is good. Plenty of body and mids. But the Soldano has wayyy more clarity and much more detailed high end. I can also see you have the treble down slightly on the Soldano so there's more room for that high end if needed.

  • I’m positively loving my gen 3 especially with my mk2 as a stereo pair of 112’s .

  • Both sound good, but between them I prefer the Soldano. Though, I’m willing to bet if the Katana was further tweaked, via the software, the tones could be even more alike.

  • Both sound great and the Katana is very useable. I think I prefer the SLO tho as it seems to have more of a mid grunt that would sit better in a band mix.

  • Ha! I actually favor the recorded Katana sound over the SLO. Sounds more open, with better lows. Not sure how those lows translate to everything fitting in a big mix, but it's good that they are there, so that they can be taken out (vs. not having them).

  • katana sounds great but compared to the soldano it sounds too clinical while the soldano has character.
