I just got into singing and playing. Jerry the Race Car Driver is a fun one I just learned. A bit of a challenge but no problem on my fretted bass. That song is much harder to sing and play with my fretless bass.

When I was young, I knew I could sing, but I couldn't manage to play at the same time. My brain just wouldn't process it.
The breakthrough moment for me was in 1982 when Huey Lewis released "Workin' For a Livin' and I noticed the vocal phrasing fell mainly on the notes of the bass line. How that had ever eluded me I'm still not quite sure. But it changed everything.
Soulful vox plus polyphonic bass= bad@$$ery.

Vocals will do weird shit like start early or late on a bar. I've found it helpful to lock both together by associating where within the riff the vocals go. So, if the vocal line starts on the "3 and a" of the previous bar, I will identify the exact note within the fill or what ever I'm doing the vocals start on. Then I will know the first 3 or whatever words come before the 1 pulse on that line and can actually hit both the correct vocal placement as well as nailing the downbeat.
