Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.

CORRECTION: Mick says Orange Music started in Charing Cross Road, London in the late 1960s.
It actually began in New Compton St in 1968 – Happy 50th Anniversary to Cliff Cooper and everyone at Orange!

In this video we plug in the Orange OR15 for the first time to see what we can learn. Dan has very limited experience of Orange amps; I have a little more – Mick here – but we’re essentially starting from scratch.
Even if you don’t have an OR15 there are some goodly amp basics in this video, for example the relationship between gain, master and headroom at 7:44 and delays used in the front or in the loop at 15:02. Full timings below…
Apart from all that, we use a selection of common gain types and a new pedal or two to get some tones going. We hope this kind of approach will encourage you to try stuff and raise some questions that will help you with this specific amp and indeed others that might share common features.
Now, we managed to avoid the 7-watt mode entirely. It wasn’t exactly intentional, although may be influenced by the fact that we tend not to use low power modes in any amps. Which doesn’t mean it doesn’t sound good – apologies for the omission. In 7-watt mode you simply get less headroom and more power amp overdrive at lower levels. It’s still plenty loud!

  • Funny how it can take just one thing to make a judgement. I’ve been intrigued off and on by Orange amps for a while, but when you demonstrated how it cleans up with the guitar volume – or more properly – how Poorly it cleans up with the guitar volume, I was just like, Nope. No longer Orange-curious.

  • Can anyone please explain to me why they don’t like effects loops? What are the downsides?

  • Before we moved, I used an amp switcher to go through my amps and cabs in my studio for recording. I would love flipping through my Mesa Boogie dual rectifier, my Hughes and kettner tm36, my krabk rev series 1 original, and my peavey 6505+, as well as my or15.
But something’s changed this year. And last year as well. So last year I rebuilt my entire pedalboard. I used to use a pedalboard as an addition to my amp. So noise gate, overdrive, delay, chorus. That way any time I switched amps I had a board for my distorted or clean tones. But I started watching shows like this and jhs pedal show, and I wanted to experiment with getting all my tone from pedals. I rebuilt my entire board with some crazy cool gain stages. I noticed my orange or15 was my cleanest amp, very robust and thick midrange. It took pedals so well. That was last year. This year? We moved to a two bedroom and all my amps are in the closet. Except for the or15, which is run clean with a little bit of gain and runs all my 17 pedals.
For gain, I start with the mxr Timmy which is always on. That goes into my mxr phase 90 for fun, and the gain continues with my animals fishing is as fun as fuzz which is a Soviet big muff. Then a nux fet boost (amazing pedal please buy one it’s only $35), which pushes my fuzz into crazy places. But then there’s a screaming blues set up as a deep distortion, and then a blues driver as a creamy overdrive. Then there’s a Wawa ds1 as either full rhythm distortion or a lead, all depends. Also a big muff nano. All of those gain pedals sound so good and clean with zero noise on my or15. Not to mention all the reverb and delays with zero effects loop. I just went straight in, honestly this has changed my playing and my writing. All because I chose the or15 as my amp. I said “no matter what I build this amp will be my foundation.” Solid.

  • In the beginning I also hated the tube screamer, because I followed the crowd I guess and.. then I tried one. I was smitten straight away. Now I use mostly the Way Huge Green Rhino mkIV (TS808 with a bypassable 3 band EQ). It's my favourite Tube Screamer. I also own a TS9, which is also great, but I am more of a TS808 guy. I also prefer butt over boobs. But I ❤ both.

  • This amp sounds like it has a bright cap. If it does, I'd love to hear it without one. I bet it would come alive for pedals at that point.

  • Most important question for me is can this head on 15 watts hold its ground with a punchy solid blues band in small/medium and large pubs?????

I've seen one of these on marketplace FB currently for £300 but its black not orange enclosure, which for me i prefer the look of.

  • I like what you have done here and it prompts a question knowing what I have learned from you about wet/dry and stereo. I would like to have your opinion on the Orange Rocker 32 with the fascinating stereo effects loop as a compact wet/dry platform. Could this even be worth of a show? Probably a silly question because if it was you would have done it already!

  • It’s not inspired on vintages oranges, is just a mini modern rockerverb without reverb and whistles, just the dirty channel of the RV with EL84 power period…

  • As soon as Dan hit the first note I was like….thats an orange! What more can you ask for? I'm playing my orange through g12 creambacks. It's a match made in dirty bliss. Thanks for doing this lads. I picked up a hdrx20 and kinda want one of these as well.

  • The tube screamer is hard to listen to above 2 or 3 on the gain. The dry signal forcing its way through has always been unpleasant to me. I think drive at 1-2 and the volume all the way up give a great gain boost and a nice boost to the high-mids on slightly driven sounds. I really haven't found another application that doesn't involve the dry bleeding through.

  • this is the first Amp I unpacked, turned to 12 and practically never changed anything. Love at first powerchord

  • I wouldn't choose Orange as a main single amp, but in a two amp set up, they're a solid match with Fender or Vox.
Never gave them much of a chance until I saw PJ Harvey and her band get some outstandingly raw sounds out of them.
As far as a platform for pedals or alone, along with Hiwatt, a good choice for not necessarily R&R sounds.

  • Why would you use delay in the front? People back in the day didn’t have a choice. Regardless of headroom. The delays are being boosted by the preamp, also reshaped by the tone stack, and then being amplified by the power tubes.

    I have a terrible analogy:
I like wooden wheels because I feel they ride nicer than the rubber ones with wheel bearings.

    Haha.

Video was still cool. I’m just kidding and shit haha. It’s all Subjective

  • The OR 15 is a great sounding amp, I have one. Orange amps and tone is not for everybody. These amps are quite particular, and great for doomers ;). Nice review, as usual, thanks.

  • I regret selling this amp, but super glad I got a good deal on a used Orange Ad30. I love the mid range focus of many Orange amps and how warm they sound. Orange really pokes through a mix without being spikey or harsh sounding. I also think of more humbucker tones than single coil tones with Orange.

  • You guys are funny, you can't help it! try keep that gain knob down on the drives and boost only the volume of the pedal. The amp set that way is already cooking, do not need gain from the pedal, just a boost in volume. Why add transistor distortion when you have a tube amp that is already breaking up? I also find pretty misleading the way you talk about headroom for a 15w amp against a bigger wattage. A small wattage fender have more headroom than a 5150, if for headroom we consider the ability of the amp to perform a clean sound. if we talk about wattage we should discuss volume rather and headroom . Cheers

  • As a one channel amp, it is suited for players who use their guitars volume for preamp/gain control. Or the studio for a certain gain stage sound. Its sounds are awesome. At 15watts without being mic'd up it is severely limited in a live setting imo because of the 4-stage single knob gain control versus 2 or more channels, although pedals, and/ or running the send to another amp/board could overcome that inherent deficit. Plus,15watts is not quite enough with most drummers on its own. The dynamics/pick attack/response however are stellar. The components, design, proper tube buffered loop, and overall build give it its own personality over most other 15watt EL-84 amps out there. I've had many. A future collector's item I would guess. Neither Marshall nor Fender. Truly different. Gotta get one now. So, thanks in advance for the next hole in my wallet lol.

  • I am into clean sound and I love orange. The "dirty" channel or the natural distortion of the single channel amps is very usable for me.
