Gibson Acoustic Comparison | Hummingbird vs. Dove

As we welcome the Dove back into Gibson’s lineup, here’s a comparison between these two legendary bird-themed acoustic guitars. Both square-shoulder dreadnoughts, these two have a few differences outside of their avian counterparts; we’re comparing the tonewood combinations of spruce-mahogany and spruce-maple. Do you prefer one over the other? Do you agree with McKee that mahogany is like a warm s’more– ooey gooey and messy, but great? Or do you prefer the more pronounced bass and treble EQing of maple? These are both incredible instruments, and we’re happy to have them back in our hands at Alamo Music.

I own the Hummingbird, bought it this year, and it's my lifetime 6-string. To me, the Dove is like a Martin in that I love to hear one but never wished to own one. Never could play like the Alamo guys anyway, so one elite box will do very nicely.
Little aside: as piezo pickups go, I think the VTC is excellent. It doesn't have the tonal versatility of a mid-sweep set-up but it works very well indeed. Volume, Tone, Compression. Clever stuff.

  • Thanks for the comparison; I was planning to buy a Dove and your demo convinced me to buy the Hummingbird instead! The Hummingbird sounds cleaner to me throughout the range. The Dove has more bass but it comes across as a bit boomy.

  • I was saving the pennies for the Hummingbird. Looks like more pennies to save for the Dove. Much, much nicer in all its attributes.

  • A little bit like the difference between a D28 and a D18. That Dove is articulate, crisp and balanced. Perfect for some types of music like finger style work.

  • My brother bought a new Dove at the beginning of the 70's paid a little over 500 for the guitar did not impress me so much then but before he passed he wanted to set down and play just a little so I did just that he also had a Taylor which he loved but the tone of the Dove over the years was just beautiful don't think I have played nothing better yet amazing how time changes sound loved it miss him so much but I treasure our times together while playing together .

  • Two slightly different sounds, but both unique and beautiful, it's like choosing ice cream, one day your in the mood for strawberry one day vanilla ????

  • Would be love to hear a comparison between a Dove and a faded hummingbird since the faded version is a little louder and brighter-sounding.

  • I recently played both models & my feeling was that the Hummingbird sounded like a beefed up J45 while the Dove sounded very similar to a J200.

  • the Dove sounds like its a bit to aggressive, you hear the maple .. I think mapel works better on j200 style

  • This & your other, similar vids are extremely helpful

I love the aesthetics of the Dove but the Hummingbird sounds perfect to me.
