  • Counting all the beats and the “ands” is hard for me, tho I played professionally for years, so I do it by feel. I wish I cud learn to count it cuz I wonder what I’m missing, tho I play funk and R&B. I thank you for this lesson, I admire you.

  • Hi Dan, I very much enjoyed your video, personally for me being able to count 16th notes in this 1e&a-2e&a-… way was a HUGE step forward. Once you can mentally structure music in these different subdivivisions, evereything make SO much more sense. BTW I had the chance to see Marcus Miller (the man himself) life in concert last week, and it was outlandish. His sense of timing is incredible. He definitely knows his subdivisions…..

  • Less-than-pro tip: using notation software (MuseScore in my case) can help learn to hear tricky rhythms because the software can play it for you. Once it's in my head, it comes out my fingers much more easily.

  • Dan this is the type of lesson for me ????
I would also probably imagine for the majority of anyone learning bass.
Its great to learn scales, modes etc.. I can honestly say this is where I struggle.
Hopefully you can put a detailed course together very soon.

  • Good stuff, thanks! But to make them really helpful, the examples you play could do with a couple of bars counting in to help us establish the tempo before you start playing. Especially the last couple of examples with the 1/16 rests. As it stands, it's a bit frustrating.

  • So Dan, my suggestion would be that you cut the amount of talking in half to start with moving forward, so you may use that time for more doing. In all your videos I find myself always very anxious, and waiting a lot for you to starting playing the notes. The actual playing makes a lot of things very obvious, so there is no need for so much preliminary explaining. Imagine your audience doesn't speak/understand English very well

  • As a guitar player of over 50 years, who has only recently become enamoured with bass, and bought two (a Thunderbird and a 5 string neck-thru), I am completely absorbed by how DIFFERENT the whole approach to playing this instrument is…????
    And particularly…the rhythm aspect.
It really IS a whole new mindset!

  • You start the count 3, 4, before playing. Why and how does that relate to where the bass line begins, if that makes sense.

  • Good video ????. I generally associate the final 8th or 16th mentally with the subsequent note. If it's followed by a rest rather than a note, I focus on the ending of that 8th/16th.

  • Was literally just looking for a lesson on this; I swear I find all of your videos at the exact time I need them. Good video as always
