Great Tape Delay Tones Part 2: Fulltone TTE vs Pedals –That Pedal Show
Following our show on real tape delays, we’re getting in to some of our fave Echoplex / single-head-type sounds.
Life too short for long YouTube videos? ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ info below.
COVID-19: This video was filmed long before the social distancing measures advised by various governments. We are of course following the proper guidelines at this time.
Be well y’all!
Dan and I recently fired up a Fulltone TTE, Roland RE-201 Space Echo, EchoFix EF-X2 and Hiwatt Custom Tape Echo to orientate ourselves around some lovely tape echo sounds.
In this follow up we listen to some single-head sounds in the style of the Fulltone, which is descended from the Maestro Echoplex lineage. Echoplexes varied greatly of course depending on model and era, so pinning down ‘one sound’ to chase is not the purpose of the exercise. Nevertheless we’ve chosen a bunch of modern pedals that do the ‘tape thing’. And yes, we’re only doing single-head sounds today: multi-heads can come later.
Once we’ve had a listen to some pedals, we then delve a little deeper into what a tape delay is actually doing to try to recreate it with other pedals.
Enjoy the episode!

Great, video, as always. The new EQD Disaster transport reisiew is way more tape delay sounding than the old, which sound more like a memory man.
I do own an echoplex and nothing will beat the real thing. That being said being a working musician, I dont like taking the EP-3 on the road for small pub gigs hence why pedals are more practical.
Perusing!
The echoplex was invented in Kenmore Ohio by two cool guys- Mike Battle and Don Dixon. My friend worked for Mike, who at the time owned a speaker reckoning shop. My friend has the very first Echoplex prototype. It looks like a piece of firewood. ????
Great video! Thx!
3:29 … Now there’s too much meta-talking!! (talkin’ ‘bout talkin’) … ????????
????????
Real rockers aren't worried about the boogeyman(covid19), I hope you didn't get the jab…
this was just OUTSTANDING ..!
great sounds, and phrasing..great tones. .great contraptions.. great fun.
i actually prefer these long episodes.
thanks so much,
kudos, from Portugal
I love these shows! I'm currently designing an analog delay pedal in 2024 and this was great
yeah the fulltone may be ultimate but not many people will tour with a tape echo. i think the cb-3 is the best.
Dunlop makes a separate Echoplex Preamp pedal.
I like the El Capistan for its pristine sounds, knowing that I can always get a degraded fidelity from it. And if it doesn’t sound exactly like a fifty+ year old effect, well, some might call that progress. 2nd choice here would be the Empress, though I don’t have one (yet).
Talk all you want, guys.
I bought the empress echosystem. I found it sterile and uninspiring. I couldn’t find the magic in that one.
????????????
It's a crime that this genius video only has 128k views. so I watched it again
My favourite was the APE. Really nice
The United States ???????? and UK ???????? really suffered and still are in 2023 with the world economy in the Tank Americans and British are proud people we will prevail…anyway my favorite delay pedals are the Electro Harmonix memory boy and Dunlop/MXR Echoplex
24:57 Belle Epoch
25:42 Echoplex
1Pedal ,1 Fx ….Wise or Dumb???
Can I offer some constructive response to your video. You two have so much skill and knowledge. I really want to hear about the 'tape echo' pedals as my holy grail is the Watkns Copycat that I grew up with only in pedal format. I do feel that by having two of you there is a lot of talk between you both with jargon and shared, in-jokes that might go over the head of the listener. Also because you are focussed on each other it does seem as if you are not talking to us, the viewer. This makes it hard to follow what you are saying. How about doing half the video each? One could talk about the essential features while the other could simply play through a few phrases, going from one pedal to another. My primary aim as a viewer is to know what the range is; price low-to-high would be a good order to go. I'd avoid looking at the manual on video as it just looks as if you are not experts and I'm sure you are both a wealth of experience. I hope you take this as a sincere attempt to improve your videos.
Some of the stuff Dan was fingerpicking sounded like church organ chord voicings. Beauitful.
and the best one is?
Great video, fellas!
I've tried a lot of these and El Cap has stayed on the board the most. I like how you can really turn the mod all the way off, and get the sound of new tape on a well-maintained machine, as you're talking about at 17:29. The thing that always appealed to me about my EP3 was not warbles and break up: it's how clean and chimey it sounds without being brittle or ice-picky. A lot of pedals that try to emulate tape delay are simply too dark and distorted. That ethereal, atmospheric sound of an EP3 comes from having MORE high end, not less.
And the wow/flutter effect can make everything sound like you've got chorus on when you play clean chords and arpeggios. I guess I'm really pretty bare bones when it comes to delays!
My only problem with the Cap is the tap function is extremely fussy, to say the least. I don't know if it's the switch or the thing itself, but I quite often need two (or even three) goes at it for it to work. It's not a huge deal, certainly not in the studio, but it's a minor annoyance live.
To me, the Dunlop Echoplex has a lot of the chime and magic of an EP-3, but I couldn't ever get the chorus sound out, even with the mod turned all the way down. It's a very specific sound and it's gorgeous – it makes you want to play for days – it's just not useful for many of my sessions or gigs. I'd love to have that high end without the modulation. But maybe I just never figured out how to work the controls properly. Wouldn't be the first time!
Shoutout to the mighty Zoia!
I'm in the market for a space echo, but I have an ehx grand canyon and oceans 12. Wondering if I can emulate space echo with those two or if it's worth upgrading to an empress for better tone?
Another great pedal that was not shown here is the universal audio starlight, which contains an ep-3 new tape setting an ep-3 with an old tape (it even skips every so often) and an ep-4 (solid state) setting. Another interesting option is the geckoplex ep-5, which I haven’t heard in real life but it has so many cool features such as reverb and a slider.
Informative! Hard to pick what or which pedals. Thanks guys
China is responsible for all of the covid/coronavirus crisis. China caused it, and covered it up, along with the help of the American Democrat Party…if your upset about covid, then blame China and American Democrats for "gain of function" research, (read about it on conservative news outlets, it won't be discussed on CNN, BBC, ABC, NBC, CBS, Time, Life etc) All these leftist "fake news" outlets are complicit. I believe it was intentional, along with a billion other people with common sense.
….keep marxists, communists, socialists, anti-capitalists and American democrats out of your life and you will be more free, have more money, and more guitars and gear and most of all you will be happier. By the way, good video.
Fluorescent lights will throw a green cast on stuff until the color correction kicks in. ????
it may be a Robinson or a Goldberg but it does sound GREAT! ????
Best show
The "Lego Delay" is the coolest thing I've ever seen anyone do with pedals… Dan's an absolute legend!
delay llama?
The Empress is super underrated, the El Cap is overrated for a reason though.
This is pure gold. People will study videos like this in universaties some day.. Tape replication with analog pedals left me jaw dropping! Keep up the good work!
I wonder why I never see the Boss DD-500 when there are these "cool delay pedals" videos in all channels. Does this mean that "it is good" when they demo it, but… no one really uses it?
Thank you for long videos!!!!!!!????????????????
UA Audio & Belle Epoch Deluxe sound Beautiful. It's a shame that their lack of control renders them practically worthless to me personally. Just watched PeteThorn's Review of the new Suhr Analog Delay Discovery.
very interesant the part 2, awesome, thanks
Dunlop EP 103 is clearly the most organic and tape-like to my ears.
Hey Dan! I'm assuming you had that JHS Pink Panther delay on digital mode. I'd be curious to see how its tape mode stacks up against some of these other tape emulations!
Fascinating!!! Kudos to Dan for his echo contraption!!! A really beautiful episode!!!
If only the Belle Epoch had Midi . . . and dozens of programmable presets. This is the one major thing missing on all of these analogue delay units.
So could you run the dunlop echoplex through the j rocket ape and have a killer ep3 of the old days, preamp and all?
Strymon, the "Jordache" of pedals. Over rated, over priced, over hyped, under whelmed by most of their products including El
Man that flashing number thingy sure is annoying and perplexing. It's the day player taking the focus from the lead actor.
@Intro: This was almost a year ago… Who would've thunk we'd still be waiting to get out of "social distancing". Will there be a backlash? 60's revisited?
Empress “tape” delay is my fav. I’ve had it for years and is a mainstay on my board until recently. Won’t sell it though!
Hi! just have a question could the ape from j-rocket be a good solution to get the lifeliness of the volante get it a little better analog sound and humpf, or is there any other good solution to get a little life into the volante for ex maybe the strymon deco (really hate all the digital pedals, that make everything sounds like you need to play heavy hardrock sounds and all sounds sound lifeless)
