Guitar Amplifier Rack Project Part 2 – DIY Build & Changes Made / Surprise Amplifier Addition!

Building an Amplifier / Cabinet / Control Rack – Changes Made… Surprise Amplifier Addition!

In the previous video – Part I of my Amplifier / Cabinet Control Rack Project I covered the thinking behind building such a unit, the materials needed and the construction process, so if you missed that and this is something you are thinking about, do watch that, as I cover a fair bit of detail.

In this video – Part 2 I complete the unit by working out where all the wiring will run, holes needing drilled, cables cut to length, the fitting of all the rack gear and cabling everything to the switcher unit. Along the way I make some changes to the amplifiers that will be in the rack.

A common mistake when bringing together all kinds of equipment is to use in-expensive leads, cables and connectors which can result in electrical cross-interference, earth loops, and loose fittings causing electrical shorting. There are those who would say that you do not have to go to the cost of heavy duty cabling with gold plated connections and the like, and while that is quite true, it’s worth making sure that care is taken when deciding on mains cable, plug and sockets, surge protection boards, speaker cables and instrument cables and the jack plugs associated with those.

As the name implies – Amp Rack – how many amplifiers can you have on at any one time? The general rule is to divide the amplifiers wattage with the voltage in use to determine the amps drawn by the amplifier. Where anyone is unsure about power draw it is best to seek a professional in that line of work who can give advise. It’s important to remember that other factors aside the amp rack need to be taken into consideration when using a domestic home electrical supply, such as computers, studio monitors, pedal-board, and other accessories that might be on the same circuit.

As mentioned previously, Valchromat and Ash were used in this construction and once again different choices can be made to reduce the costs involved, however the use of these materials was a deliberate choice so as to speed-up construction and create a sound and sold structure. Enjoy…

  • Neat looking amp rack. I have plans for something similar although my plan is to build it on top of a pair of 18U racks that will contain my small collection of mostly 90s vintage rack gear. One change I plan to make that differs from your setup is to put the amps on sliders to more easily access the rear of the amp without moving the entire assembly. While the whole thing will be on wheels, it will still be about a couple of meters long and not easily moved.
