  • B.S. ! Trying to find the exact Amp & Pedal combination is a "Needle in a Haystack" solution in the search for Sustain. And I'm just a beginner!

  • Good built guitar, so that your frets are all levelled, so when you note a string, it's vibrating freely with no other frets in the way (buzzing etc), even with low action. Bolt on or necktrough etc is not really in the 1st place if your frets are worst in terms of fit and finish and levelling and crowning etc. After that, a good technique for pressing the string nice and firm.

  • I swear I have good sustain on most guitars. I have this one that I just bought a new pickup for and it sounds amazing but same problem, hardly any sustain. Is it maybe the fret board, the wood the guitar is made of, the height of the pick up, something I am not listing? I got no clue man. If anyone can help me figure it out I'll send you a box of homemade cookies in the mail

  • I bought my guitar for $150 and i have a lot of sustain. A really good guitarist said my guitar is worth more than $150

  • The way I covered the critical areas on sustain is I started learning hacks about how to increase sustain, resonance, and attack.wax potted, lacquered,or glued pickups increases sustain as well as a hotter wound pickup. stuffing the springs or silent springs eliminates resistance. pickup heights affects attack and sustain. string size, tension, and tuning, matters too.i created a mixture of graphite powder, lip balm and Vaseline that i use as a temporary conductive lubricant on my strings, slotted nut, Bridge, and in the tuner peg holes and gaps. my rig consists of a modified fuzz pedal and a compressor. use shielded grounded equipment for true infinate sustain and a good quality sound when not holding strings.

  • What are those certain amps for the Gary Moore/Santana types of sustain for days?! I tried Oranges and Marshall JVMs. Even TS-9 boosted, they wouldn't satisfy.

  • This is called feedback and it is achieved by high volume and distortion. Guitar string self-resonates with the sound coming out from the amp. It is not sustain.

  • Ok, now for the questioner's answer. First of all, your guitar's wood and paint scheme affect the "resonance" of the guitar. Less paint and sealer equal more resonance. Why?
Because the guitar's natural wood can "breath" more freely. This is why guitars are made out of different woods, because each type of wood has a different resonance. More resonance equal more sustain. Why do you think SRV never repainted his guitar? Next, is the pickups. High output pups can get your there faster. Next is the pedals. A Compressor is your best friend when it comes to getting sustain. Despite what this guys says, you can get sustain on the cleanest amp in the world if you have the right guitar, pups, and pedals. You can get sustain at ANY volume level if you have the right mix gear. So, if you have just an "average" guitar, get yourself a good set of high output pups, a good distortion and compressor pedal and sustain your way to rock godhood. I might add that getting a good bone or brass nut also helps out a lot in getting more sustain out of your guitar.

  • Rough fret-edges would help you produce sustain by vibrato, as would strings that are wound so that rubbing them over the frets agitates them. Don't know if it's worth the trouble but just sayin'

  • I achieve a lot of sustain by combining distortion and fuzz (minmum amount of Fuzz, distorsion after fuzz) before my Blackstar amp. But you gotta love that kind of sound.. otherwise don't go for it.

  • sustain mastering has to do with the vibrationl frequency of the string, you get more sustain with a vibrato technique, where you do forceful but small amplitude (height of bending the string up and down) vibrato that matches the strings frequency, where the frequency waves in the string are amplified through matching some of the complex vibrational and wave dynamics when a string is picked, this is all done through feel, and lots of practice, different strings, different gauges and how you pick will influence how the string vibrates, and vibrato techniques will really add sustain. Strength and dexterity is key, as well as sensitivity and a good ear. Thats how people like stevie ray vaughan can get such enormous sound, tone and sustain because of their fingering, and feel. SRV for instance used 12 or 13 gauge strings that were high off the fret board so that the strings could vibrate more, he also had enormous hands, and was rediculously strong.

  • So you can't do the sustain (as mentioned in the letter 'just like gary moore') … We all understood that, what was the purpose of this video, that's what we couldnt understand…you obviously have a sweet British accent so thanks for the accent lesson ( I guess)

  • the playing technique is common sense…   level up a little bit your pickup height, get a sustainer/compressor, a booster pedal or equalizer,  and a clean delay pedal with a very low feedback and delay level will do the work
