Kings of Tone examines twelve masters of tone revealing their gear and effects formulas (and how you can emulate same with your own gear) along with their singular approaches to “touch” and stylistic phrasing.
While our quest is ultimately about finding our own “voice” and signature sound, we must first study the masters, just as they studied those who came before them. Kings of Tone dissects the styles, touch, tones, amps, pedals, guitars and setups of Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Billy Gibbons, Dickey Betts, Duane Allman, The Edge, Angus Young, David Gilmour, Keith Richards and Mark Knophler.
Your Professor of Tone is NYC session player and educator Jeff McErlain, whose standing-room-only workshops on the subject testify to his expertise stemming from years of tone exploration. “I hope to demystify the tonal qualities of these twelve players by sharing the insight I’ve gained over many years studying them and deconstructing their styles, touch and rigs.”

Are these effects going thru the send and returns or just out front?
I have this pedal….cool…(nova delay)
This is the clearest demonstration and probably the leanest. Few moving parts with your approach. Thank you.
What amp are you using for this?
what amp do you use with this effects setup? thanks!
I’ve been chasing Gilmour’s tone for about two years now. It resulted in me building my own pedalboard, loosely based on his “Pulse” rig, but on a tight budget. The Electric Mistress Deluxe is a great flanger, and a must for the tones off of “The Wall”. EHX makes a few current variations, but none are as good as the big box. There is thankfully a small, and cheap, solution: the Mooer E Lady. It’s a micro sized pedal, and it absolutely nails the old Mistress tones. It’s also inexpensive (well under $100; I got mine for $40).
Jeff….your run through was a joy to listen to…..you've nailed some iconic tones at OUR prices…..thanks….????
Add a fuzzface for the sustain
Love this, thanks for taking the time to upload.
you need a noise gate.
Nailed it
Get a Sweet Sound Mojo Vibe for the REAL Univibe tone!!
people uses dynacomp with less compression, max 10 o'clock
The Nova delay does not work on an analog head
Do you know of an analog delay that does what the Nova delay does when it comes to the slapback dotted eighth note
Judging Gilmour' sound is like judging the popularity of a woman !? It depends on the size of their Rack !!!
Thanks for a great video. This is the one I do really like, not spending huge ammount of money… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXMo1ez8YkI
Wow blown away with the pedal knowhow in this video…just when i was losing interest in pedal works…one question when you say a pedal comes before another ..is that relative to the guitar or amp??
How did Gilmour scrap up the money when he was getting started before he became famous for all these expensive pedals? Do you have the delay settings for the pedals?
Did you know that ND-1 Nova delay lets you hold the tap temp button and strum your guitar to set tempo without having to tap your foot?
Found the dynacomp too noisy, so sold it…
