  • Getting closer to the old album sounds with a Behringer Vintage Tube Monster with an EHX tube as boost and a NUX amp academy using the JCM800, bass and mids 12 o’clock on both, treble towards 3 o’clock on both, gain at 2 on the boost and crancked on the NUX, and Presence between 12 and 3 o’clock, bias is also tweaked in the NUX, can’t recall the setting.
I use a HB Fusion 3 with a Super 3 in the bridge and run it all into the clean channel of a CR120H, Pedal Baby should work too, bass set at 2 and treble between 2 and 3, and just got a Celestion Neo V-Type which gets closer than a V30, Orange VOTW and the standard speakers in an Laney Ironhearth 4×12, will try to mix some neo creambacks in to see if that adds the last frequency I miss.
Also, keep in mind that the complete recording setup is more than just a LP and a Marshall, Ace used other amps and guitars as double tracking, which is quite impressive for that time, cause he laid them tracks down pretty tight.
Also got a space delay doing a fast 3 head background slapback with it’s treble crancked and a tiny bit of spring delay, without that it sounds to dry, Ace has his tech switching fx on stage too btw.
In one of the rig rundows one of the buttons on his green line 6 pedal is labeled Detroit, so he does use a bit more live, but in small amounts, the exception is Rocket Ride.

  • Without Bob Ezrin's production, it's a long shot. In the mix those tones are amazing. Same with his production of The Wall.

  • "D# makes the most sense" is by far the most puzzling comment I have heard for a long time. You say they tune down a half step! Sorry, but that would mean Eb! Going down is flat – going up means sharp.
Furthermore – the riff is totally wrong… "You had one job Sir"…

  • Ace at that point was probably using early DiMarzio's too, not the stock LP pickups.

  • Uhmm the guitar straight into the amp was the perfect Kiss sound then the pedal just added wayy too much gain…..

  • Merci ????
I listened through this album in my car today. To be fair, sonically it's all about Paul's vocals, Ace's guitar and the drums plus the massive glam rock post-production. ????

  • the Electro-Harmonix LPB-1 pedal is a modern reissue of what Ace used to boost the amp. It is widely available.

  • How about “Red Barchetta” by Rush, or “It’s a Mistake” by Men at Work (Ron Strykert ‘s solo is underrated in this song).

  • See the title…oh cool, another LP in a cranked plexi tone.
Would be amazing to see some less obvious guitar tones such as Radiohead, My Bloody Valentine, St. Vincent, etc…

  • Ace… you just can't copy the tone of this guy 🙂 I mean some players got pretty close but then you attend Ace's show, you hear THAT tone and your get shiver down your spine because yeah!! It's like listening to "Alive II" all over again. He's still got it!

  • Even without using the original gear, you've got the tone pretty close. I will suggest some dooubling effect, when playing this riff alone, as the record is doubled guitars.

Anyway, recreating the tone with available gear seems more usefull to me then diggin, whats on original record (what is always haze-y as, who does really remember that stuff?)
