  • One thing I do during rehearsals is I’ll watch the guitar player and see what chord he’s playing during different parts of the song. And you don’t necessarily need to know exactly what chord they’re playing…basically, I just memorize the chord shape they’re using at the beginning of the verse, chorus, bridge, etc. so if I get lost, I’ll be able to get back on track quickly. Hope that makes sense. You could also put some guitar into your mix on your monitors so you can better hear where they are in the song. I’ve found if I cannot hear either the guitar or keyboard well, it’s a lot easier to get lost.

  • Scott, I really love your videos, and I love being a member on your site. One suggstion though, could you have just a touch more content for those of us who just don't like Jazz? I understand that it can do wonders for my playing, but I'm ok with no being a great bass player, I'll settle for good.

  • I don't mean to offend anyone, but it seems to me as there's less "how to not get lost" than "how to recover when lost" in this vid :/

  • Great video Scott! Just to clarify… the feel thing is the same thing that happens when you're playing a 12 bar blues and just know where to go?

  • Some great tips here, I got another one which helps me ALOT:
On your setlist(if you don't get one, then bring one yourself) near each song write the first note/chord you play, this really helps get your mind in gear and into the song, and sometimes even if you don't remember the progression of the song, that first note will help you figure out the rest as you go along.

  • Hi Scott, in Lesson 1 of Reading Charts Survival Guide you say melody is not really important. or I'm missing the point somewhere?

  • Trick #1,
I learned a great trick from a pro player. Just stub a note on a string, preferably the E string. It will not be out of tune as it does not have a pitch it has a thump. Just play it in time until you are back on track.
    Trick #2
If you are not sure of the song, especially at jam nights, ask the guy who knows the tune to mouth the chords. You can lip read the 12 notes they can mouth, but tell them you only need the root note not the full chord. Once the guy was saying B flat minor flattened 5th or something like that and the chords were changing much faster than he could mouth them.
Hope this avoids any train wrecks.

  • On number 3: Also counting and feeling 12 bars is also good to feel. Important to note that many songs deliberately not go with 4,8,16,32 to stimulate the listener

  • question you don't know the song, they just gave you the chart that day and you get lost reading it

  • Happens to the best of us.
Saw Les Claypool get lost while playing "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" for about a bar and half.

  • Good video mate.
I've always had a hard time playing So What and similar songs just because of the long periods of the same chord.
Definitely going to start thinking about these tips when I'm practising and playing!
