How the Pros Think About Soloing | COUNTRY GUITAR LICKS AND TRICKS Ep. 4

Welcome to the fourth episode of my Country Guitar LICKS AND TRICKS series. When I was first learning country solos I was always puzzled by what it was the players chose to play. I made this episode hoping to shed some light on how one might approach a solo like this. The song is “Mercury Blues” by Alan Jackson. The guitar parts were recorded by none other than Brent Mason! Hope you find it helpful! Let me know below if there’s other topics you would like me to address. Thanks for watching!

  • probably doesn't matter at all but is your low E further down from the edge of your fretboard for a reason? looks like there's quite a bit of more space compared to all my guitars

  • Great breakdown of this solo, and great breakdown of how Brent Mason uses the chord changes to guide his playing and create a theme on the song (mostly his use of 7th extensions).

  • Good stuff. We didn’t have this type of resource when available in the late 70’s when I was 12. Unless you knew an old hand that could show this, you had to figure it out yourself . I hope the young guys understand what they have at their fingertips. Thanks for your service.

  • This was by far the best lesson on this solo I have come across. Primarily because it is not just a tab and yo playing, but you explain what is goinf on and thus give us something to build upon and make it our on down the line. I would love it if you did the second solo of that song as well in a similar fashion.

  • Man, that is a fantastic breakdown/explanation! Would you be interested in trying out some handmade guitar picks Steve? My wife and I make them out of coconut shell (and experimenting with other hardwoods). Let me know!

  • I've been asking myself this question for years with no answer found. So they do change scales to match the chords! I knew it.. Thanks for finally telling their secret✔️ They're Busted.. I'll get them now

  • Your spastic hand movements make it very difficult to see and concentrate on information you’re sharing. Please stop it.

  • Thank you for taking the time to explain how this solo relates to the chords. Really helps. ????

  • Very interesting explanation from someone who is a perpetual beginner.

  • As usual, very talented demonstration and I learn a lot from you. One constructive criticism: you do say things like "up here" a lot, like, we'll bit play that triad "up here", but without saying exactly what frets you're on. It's not always easy for us to see on the video exactly where your fingers are +/- a couple of frets, so suggest you always say out loud fret # or box/position when you move to a new position. 😉

  • Steve, killer playing and teaching as always thank you! Do you have any paid lessons coming in the future or working with something like pickup music to fund your teaching ? I’d be happy to pay to be able to get downloadable tab and maybe occasional backing tracks

  • Dude, you are so good at explaining these concepts. And your Helix preset is my main country/Americana sound since you released it. Do you offer private lessons over zoom?

  • That was a great lesson, thank you. I really liked the way you broke this down and explained what is going on. For me it is soooo much easier to internalize this stuff when I know what is going on musically instead of just memorizing a bunch of licks. Thanks again.
