Whether you’re seeking a near-pristine collector-grade vintage Stratocaster, or a guitar with a modification or two that’s perfect for bringing retro sonics to your weekly gigs, this educational video will provide you with the tools to make an informed decision and choose the best old-school Strat for you.
Sit back and let the trio of Guitar Center Director of Used and Vintage Jack Hetherington, Guitar Tech/Vintage Specialist David Maddux and Guitar Center Hollywood Artist Relations Manager Eric Bradley take you through the “insides and outsides” of identifying and verifying vintage Stratocaster guitars.
“It’s amazing to me that we still have guitars that are 70 years old or older walk into our stores that are completely 100-percent original,” says Hetherington. “On the other hand, one of the great things about Stratocasters is you could change things out on them. If something broke on the road, you could get it fixed and get back up onstage. So, there are vintage Strats out there that are not exactly as they left the factory, but they are still amazing guitars.”
In this video, Hetherington, Maddux and Bradley evaluate a CBS-era sunburst Stratocaster by checking its finish, pickguard, headstock, electronics, body, neck, pickup selector and more. Watch as Maddux unscrews the neck and pickguard to reveal its potentiometer date codes, neck-date imprint, inspection stamps and more to uncover its secrets.

If you could have any vintage Fender Strat, what would it be? Let us know in the comments! ????
First of all you’re hoping the sales guy actually knew enough to take the vintage Strat in for a trade or sale. I’ve encountered dudes at GC who would have said “Well the finish is all messed up and it has a lot of scratches on the back. Our customers won’t like that.” ????????????
awesome video, didn't understand how that neck plate got there… I know that the loaded pickguard is from 57 but neck and body from 69 with a 57 plate????
How to buy it? Walk in store, give money, walk out store with guitar. Simple!
60s body and neck
you can have better for quater of price….this market of vintage guitar is a true scam…
I met Eric Bradly in 09 and me and my friend Mark went over to where his band practiced and Eric let me play a song from the Young Royals with them, it was amazing.
2024, the Great Year of the Used Guitar
I've said for years you could corner the used online guitar market if you would bring quality ads to your website. You have by far the largest inventory with the absolute lowest quality listings. The pics and descriptions are absolutely atrocious. The market is sitting right in your lap if you would just hire pros to upgrade your listings.
I bet over half of them are not original at all. Gruhn authenticated a ‘55 Strat that had s new body and neck, but ‘55 parts.
Don't. Many other cooler, cheaper, & better sounding guitars out there. Les paul vintage. A vintage humming bird is a 1000× begger
I've had a vintage green metallic strat open in a web tab for months, very similar to the first strat you showed here, if not the vey same one. It was advertised as a 1962, and it was very inexpensive as far as 1962s go. I did think that it was a refin (or less likely a very faded color like Sonic blue). I only say that because of the price. And also I was wondering about the rest of the guitar due to the cheap price…. But if it's only a refin (and that one non original tuner)… bargain… It's still out of reach for me at the moment unfortunately… unless I sell a couple guitars I have here, which I'll never… I actually dig the color quite a bit even if unoriginal.
I'll stick with my mexican fender strat. She's 20 years old so she's vintage lol.
Videos about vintage guitars are likable mostly because usually them guitars get tested by killer players but only rich people can afford that stuff, those are wall hangers and not players.
Thank you… great video… appreciate knowledge
