How To Dial in Amplifiers // Get your amp (or amp model) in the sweet spot

In this video, Bradford walks through the process of setting up and dialing in amplifiers, including how to get two amps in stereo to sound great.

We’re using real amps through UA Ox’s in this video, but you can apply these same principles to digital amp models as well.

Table of contents:
00:00 – Welcome
00:39 – The amp we’ll be dialing in: Matchless C-30
01:52 – Master Volume
03:01 – Let’s turn all the knobs to noon
05:37 – Initial thoughts on the ‘all knobs at noon’ tone
06:17 – We are going to set up our amp three different ways, here’s the first one (amp is gained up)
06:39 – A note about setting your pedals up based on how the amp sounds
07:33 – Let’s make some adjustments to improve the tone
09:01 – Another way to set up your amp – a bit cleaner (edge of breakup)
09:43 – This is how Bradford would run the amp live
10:20 – Setting up the EQ on the amp
12:11 – The third way we’ll set up the amp: Clean
13:39 – A bit of a recap
16:54 – How to approach running two amps in stereo
17:09 – Setting up panning (and checking phase)
20:36 – Running the amps HOT
22:59 – Running the amps cleaner (edge of breakup)
25:44 – Running the amps KLEEEEEN
27:12 – Some thoughts on what we’re hearing with these two amps

  • This was a great video I appreciate the ability to see how hot, edge of breakup, and clean all compare . I've been using 4CM for years and am looking to switch to a front-of-amp setup. Probably going with an edge of breakup setting after watching this video. Thanks Bradford!

  • It's a great video but it's also demonstrating how much of "tone" is subjective. No wonder people go crazy trying to figure it out ????????

  • Very Useful, You Guys really got it together for sure. I find Fractals defaults are pretty good, but most users Tweak to taste, and some vintage amp. knowledge helps to. I have discovered some of the more Hidden EQ stuff with the Axe/Fractal. I tweaked a Magnatone 440 preset done by some other YT poster, and Tweaked it to sound like Lonnie Mack WHAM album. Used an Austin Buddy TIP for the Pitch Shifting Vibrato/Trem.

  • Thanks Bradford, great video!
Give the Mojotone BV30H & BV25M combo with your matchless to get you close to the old matchless speaker setup

  • You're cheating, it's almost impossible to dial in a bad sound on that amp! Seriously though, I have a DC-30 and even with master volume off it holds up. Your pictures on the wall might not hold up, but the amp holds together.

  • Guys, I purchased your amp model of the C30 for my HX stomp and it’s my favourite IR since then! Thank you!

  • Does the wideness of an out of phase sound bad in a mix? Gonna be honest it sounded wider but it didnt sound terrible, do wet effects also sound different with an out of phase stereo setup?

  • Would love to see one on how to set up the Ox and Captor to sound good. Running the amp wide open vs attenuated, should you utlize the onboard EQ, compression, etc. in them, all that sort of stuff. When I've tried using my Captor X on my HC30, I don't get a similar sound or feel to the way my amp sounds when running through the cab. Obviously some of that is due to speaker size, but still… I want to feel more inspired when running through the Captor X because it is so much more convenient

  • Gonna have this video on repeat while I restage my ampless board. Using a Humboldt simplifier and this video is perfect. Amazing stuff as always????????

  • Hard to get the entire vibe here because we can’t get a good idea of volume and headroom through YouTube. Good video idea, but hard to get the idea without being in the room

  • i really love the idea of this video. Kinda not liking using a really expensive amp with fancy features. I agree the principle is the same but maybe using a dsl or blues jr might convey the message better. Just my thought

  • Would it be possible to write a cheat-sheet version? For quick reference and sharing to the team!

  • Seriously love that you took time to make this! ????

    Loved hearing different setups.

  • Love this stuff guys. Recently got a Vox AC30C2 and found setting up this amp is fairly simple. Similar to your vid. I found actually a bit easier than digital land even

  • what about you tone and volume on your guitar? do you dime both of them or also bring them halfway?

  • Cranked master is the same as turning up pre-gain but for the power amp. You'll get less headroom, not more.
