  • Agree with a lot of these mentions. What about Justin Chancellor's tone in Reflection from the Lateralus record?

  • When i felt in love with the instrument 30 years ago, i didn't know it could and would sound like "gaw gaw gaaaw gaw gaw gawwww" gnarly sound, so far away from pop or even rock bass sounds. Modern music needed basses but it made the instrument evolve. Music is such a cool and beautiful art.

  • So with the right strings and a thin pick my Jaskson JS2 Concert bass made in India has a chance.

  • I will say.. top 4 tones I have ever heard:
    Mick Karn – Tin Drum
Les Claypool – Pork Soda album
    Blacky – Voivod's Nothingface album
Kev Hopper – Stump- A Fierce Pancake album.

I will say – STUMP, the album is called "A Fierce Pancake" from 1988.
Kev Hopper's Wal Bass playing on this is like nothing I've ever heard in my life.
    I URGE YOU GUYS.. PLEASE!!!!
check him out. He has a technique that you can't believe.
The songs "Chaos" or "Living it Down" from A Fierce Pancake, but the whole album is pure WTF playing

  • Much like the with getting a meaner slap tone or a meaner pluck tone. The key to getting a meaner pick tone is often times just picking harder or more aggressively.

  • It's like Geddy's tone. I used to think it was just drive but 90% of it is how his bass is set up, the strings, and his technique.

  • I think thin pics don't sound as good as thicker pics when playing very fast. I play with 1.5 mm @infernal desekration
