I'm fairly certain that Tim used a Joe Osborn Lakland Jazz bass with concentric pots. He only went back to using Stingrays after his time with RATM.
Tim's tone changed so often. He went from Stingray on that first album to a Jazz for a bit. The difference between the debut self-titled and EE is HUGE. He uses way more distortion and signal splitting after the self titled, and changed it up a little on every record.

great work, but in vids of live shows from this era i’ve seen him using a fender jazz bass, i think that’s why there’s more connection between notes in tim’s original recording

could you try johnsons bass tone from the band shotgun combo, hes really inspired by flea playing wise and hes bass line is just crazy
But less reverb, more focus on the middle frequencies to hollow out the sound
My Sterlings (not the cheapos, I mean the US Sterling behs model from Ernie Ball) sound closer to Commerford's tone than I've ever gotten from a Stingray. I only play them in parallel (same as a Stingray) unless I need a bunch of balls and mids for a solo, I think it's because the Sterling pickup is hotter and I don't have all the custom amps Tim does.
IMHO, Bombtrack is like Commerford at his finest.
