How To Improvise A Bass Solo! – Beginners Guide
This week we’re continuing our look at jazz standard practice by looking at improvising a bass solo through the Charlie Parker jazz blues ‘Billie’s Bounce’.
Learning to solo requires practice and development of vocabulary. There are no ‘hacks’ or easy solutions but in this lesson we’ll be looking at some simple tips for getting started on the journey. We’ll look at chord tone practice and touch on the other aspects of soloing such as vocabulary development.

Wao, your explanation provided a clear way to understand what is happening in the progression. What I previously though as difficult and time consuming, now clear, attainable, and easier to program the brain for all key tones.
Absolut genial!
I want to be able to solo
i can't wait to try this out. thank you!
Red meat for the ambitious student, Ty Sir…
Thanks, Mark! this sessión is amazing! is incredible how someone can improve with the right method. Congratulations!

Great exercice Thank you for that
what is your bass ?
I like so much the sound
thank you for all
Thanks for the lesson Mark. This series is absolute gold dust. Do you summarise other jazz standards in a similar way in your premium courses?
Is it true the bass player always gets the girl ?
You have the best bass channel, in my opinion, Mark. Thanks for all your help.
When the guitarist points at you, just point back.
Honestly the best tip for people to learn how to solo on bass is to literally just play guitar. If you learn guitar, you know the chords better than in just bass and it’s really easy to fret compared to bass. Then you take what you know and improvise around those chords.
Hi Mark, huge bass fan just about to buy my first bass and actually start learning to play instead of only listening to others. Any buying advice for a complete noob?
Excellent Mark
This is fantastic-brilliant and fun.
Superb lesson. I've bought a ton of bass books and I really feel that I shouldn't go near any of them until I can do this comfortably – and I've been playing 40 years!
I'm also trying to sing the notes before I play them. Hard finding those 7ths first! Keep singing 3rds!
This is an outstanding lesson.
Thx again….
Great lesson. There’s literally months of practice work right here.
Thank you. Great lesson. Didactic and to the point.
Tnx Mark!!!
