0:00 – Intro
Ayla Tesler-Mabe discusses what makes Prince’s guitar playing so incredible and the funk essentials of his popular songs.
0:29 – “Kiss”
Ayla is joined by her band Ludic to perform “Kiss,” a quintessential funk song from Prince.
1:45 – E Dominant 9
In the into of the song, there are two guitars where the first one is playing the classic E dominant 9 chord.
2:10 – E13 sus4
The second guitar in the intro is playing an E13 sus 4 chord with heavy wah pedal usage.
2:44 – Chicken scratch strumming
This technique is found in a lot of funk music and derived from some of James Brown’s guitar players.
3:16 – Solo
Most notable with using the wah pedal, the solo Prince plays is all in minor pentatonic.
3:35 – Bends
The “sassy little bends” are short and fast, and they appear in MANY Prince songs.
4:18 – Chorus
The chorus of the song is the dominant 9 chord shape moved chromatically.
4:32 – “1999”
Ludic jam together to play the second song on the list, Prince’s party hit “1999.”
5:53 – F Dominant 7
This main guitar part plays at the beginning and continues through the entirety of the song.
6:07 – F7sus4
The F Dominant 7 chord changes to the F7sus4 chord by moving the pinky to the 11th fret and barring the B and E string.
6:21 – Strumming
Ayla demonstrates the strumming pattern that adds to the funkiness of the song.
6:38 – Chorus guitar #1
This is a syncopated guitar part that outlines the roots of the chords but on the off beats.
7:29 – Minor Pentatonic
The funky lick Prince does in the song is right out of the minor pentatonic scale.
9:16 -Chorus guitar #2
The other guitar in the chorus follows the bass on the 1-2-3-4 while the wah pedal goes while you play the chord.
10:11 – “I Wanna Be Your Lover”
The final Prince song performance. This song was off of one of the earliest Prince albums and was a huge hit at the time.
11:15 – Intro guitar #1
The first guitar part in the intro is harmonizing with the bass.
13:42 – Intro guitar #2
The other guitar part (the more iconic part) is all very staccato. Ayla demonstrates how to achieve this technique and what notes to play.
14:55 – Pre-chorus
More funky staccato that goes into two more guitar parts. One is mirroring the bass, and the other is paying what the keyboard plays.
About Ayla Tesler-Mabe:
Ayla has been making waves in the world of guitar playing as a professional guitarist, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and composer, since the early age of 14. After only been playing for two years, her first YouTube video (a rendition of John Mayall’s “Hideaway”) put her on the map and kickstarted her music career. She has since been featured in Rolling Stone magazine, become a member of the Ernie Ball and Fender family of artists, and earned various Berklee College of Music scholarships. Musically, Ayla finds great pleasure in exploring the numerous avenues available to her through various styles of music, as seen through her work with Calpurnia and Ludic.

Nice playing, I was interested in the Prince part of this video but then I gravitated to the Meteroa!
I love you ????
What kind of weird mutant Tele is this?
You restore my faith in women; you are so sweet, wholesome, genuine, charming and of course super talented.
Anybody else ever get an expensive guitar book because the cover promised to teach The Music of Such-&-Such Artist, but instead of familiar licks and songs, it turned out to contain mostly just brief "example licks" composed by the book's unknown author "inspired by the style of Such-&-Such Artist"? Dang, that sucks.
I'm just a boxer who likes to play and create music. I don't really know have great equipment but here is a sample of my guitar paying. I hope you might enjoy it https://youtu.be/z5P-o_xPd_k
Love yr playing btw
Thank you for the lessons
One of the best channels here for new and growing players. I’ve been playing for years without classical training, and I feel like you guys have really helped to fill in the gaps for me.
Excellent!!! Thanks from France.
Hey this is really good. Absolutely loved I wanna be your lover.. old prince hits in the feels. Such an iconic opening ! I really like musicology. I have to say though, that some of the live performances are amazingly funky. There is a more recent one in a jazz festival in monteraux 2013, very funky.. absolutely out of this world. Prince rocks
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Great Job????????????????❤
Berry NicE!!!
Rule N1 : You can't play guitar like Prince
Good job Ayla!!
Not bad. Definately not Prince, not at all funky.
Wow, I wasn't expecting this. You are a great player and teacher! I aspire to have your guitar chops one day 🙂
YOU ARE AMAZING!!????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Omg….I can't believe this Prince tutorial. Prince is the reason for my interest in learning how to play!! I ent to 21 concerts and was trying to go to 100. Thank you for thus and I hope you can go over Purple Rain, Contraversy, Let's Go Crazy, Raspberry Beret and more!!
Thank you!!????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
You definitely have the gear for that sound & the feel.
I think you're playing too tight, not caring about groove and feel, it's not that funky
Great work, but if you listen closely to Prince’s funk guitar work, aside from the tone, the use of wah, the grace notes, all of which you nail, the magic ingredient is the swing/shuffle, even in the faster stuff. Your version is a little straighter in terms of feel. Prince knew how to make it sound relaxed and tight at the same time, which is why almost nobody can reproduce his riffs exactly. A very enjoyable vid though, thank you.
UGH!
UGH!!!
I don’t like guys who think my girls
Don’t like prince I don’t like his music
true. Prince was the greatest guitar player of his generation.
hands down…
Amazing video!
P would approve of your hat for sure.
I had to pause this for about a minute and come back…cuz U 2 Funky!!????
Cringe
I love hearing all that noise in your setup, no joke. Makes me feel better about all my noise coming from… Wherever it's coming from
Nice work darling
You and YOUR BAND ARE AWESOME!!!!
Just a suggestion, but can your bass player show the basslines and techniques also?
I am more of a bass player than guitar and would be interested in his approach to a song as well. Keep up the excellent job
So tight!!! When I think Prince's funkiest is when the staccato strum is extra aggressive with moving bassline and octaves…and that is DMSR!
????????????????❣️
Respect!
????☔️????☔️
Thank you so much for the breakdown. Sounds so great.
